I suppose I was looking to be blown away I as I was with the Book Thief.
Although this was a fine novel with a great mystery to keep me turning the pages, I found some of the writing sytle and language hard to get through. The main character grew on me and I really came to love him for his strengths and weaknesses.

I felt the author wanted me to sympathize with Mamah, but I just couldn't. She was completely spoiled and selfish. She wanted to live her life the way she wanted with no consequences for her actions and choices. She CHOSE to marry Edwin, and not as a young, just-out-of-high school girl, but as a woman of 30. By that time she should have had more of an idea of what she wanted from life. Rather than deal with her choice, she abandoned him and her two children. He had done nothing to her - he wasn't abusive, ... Read More:

The title is intriguing, but once you open the book, you will be most disappointed. The writing is poorly crafted, the main character too naive for words. I think this book must have somehow slipped past the copy editors--it reads like someone's first attempt at a book, where a kindly editor should have handed it back with lots of red pencil markings. As other reviewers have commented, the idea of a look at the Holocaust through the eyes of a child is intriguing, but this author botched the attempt. There are a ... Read More:

I really enjoyed this book because of the history it presented. The characters were delightful. A very enjoyable read. I had no idea that the channel islands (off England's coast) were so isolated during WW2, nor that the German's had taken it over. There were many surprises and several quirky little stories to delight the reader.

It was difficult to decide what was more disappointing: the poor narrative or the incredibly poor knowledge of the history in general, and of the region Ms. Brooks writes about in her "People of the Book". Since a lot has been said about the former in other reviews, I will comment on the latter.

On p. 67 you will find a hilarious sentence ending with "...,yet following the forms of Petrarchan sonnets that had been carried inland from Diocletian's court on the Dalmatian coast." Diocletian retired to his palace ... Read More:

It's hard to categorize this book. Is it a mystery? Yes, in a way it's a mystery. The Thirteenth Tale is ALSO a ghost story. But not a ghost story about ghouls and goblins and specters. It's a story about ghosts of the past, loss, regrets and tales left unfinished.

Margaret Lea, a lover of books and somewhat of a writer herself is asked to write the true life story of one of England's most beloved and reclusive writers, Vida Winter. People adore her books but know little about the author and what they do know are ... Read More:

Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman is a fictional story about the end of the world which, according to one Agnes Nutter, Witch, is next Saturday, but the Antichrist has been misplaced. In order to stop the end of the world from happening, an unlikely team comprised of an angel, a demon, a witch, a witch finder, and four kids must try to find the misplaced Antichrist and put a stop to the Apocalypse. What might otherwise be a pretty dark story is made light by the humor that can be found throughout Good Omens. The demon Anthony Crowley's ... Read More:

I purchased a book in the bookstore recently. It is called "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" by Sherman Alexie. Just by reading a little while in the bookstore, I thought it was going to be lighthearted and funny. However, I could not put it down once I started reading it. When I closed it for the final time yesterday, I felt so heavy-hearted. There are times when you laugh and times when you cry. It is one of the most beautifully and sensitively written books I have ever read and I am an English major. I have read a whole lot of books in my ... Read More:

The Zookeeper's Daughter is non-fiction. Most of what I read is non-fiction because oftentimes, true stories are more compelling than fiction. The Zookeeper's Daughter, well-researched, and wonderfully written, is one of the many true stories out there that should be recommended reading. Its author has woven a beautiful story out of what could have been a mundane chronological review of the subject's diaries. A page-turner, The Zookeeper's Daughter contains beautiful descriptions, believable characterizations, and a thorough understanding of what it meant to be caught ... Read More:

This is a realistic portrayal of the life on an Indian maid..many times they lead this kind of life..the caste discrimination is nicely portrayed. I have seen these things happen..also good references to honor and culture
