Holling Hoodhood is Presbyterian. Normally that isn't a problem, except on Wednesday afternoons when the Jewish kids go to Temple and the Catholic kids go to Catechism. That leaves just Holling in Mrs. Baker's 7th grade class at 2pm, much to her chagrin. Initially she tries to send him back to 6th grade math, but when that fails she puts him to work. She has him pounding the chalk dust out of the erasers (they used to do that back in 1967) but that ends up in a minor disaster. So she decides they will ... Read More:

This book is geared toward young adults, but don't let that stop you. Selznick offers an exciting story in a novel format. The book is neither traditional novel nor graphic novel: Selznick mixes pages of text with pages of wordless illustrations which flesh out characters and advance the plot.

Hugo Cabret is an orphan who lived in the train station, where his uncle keeps the clocks running. But his uncle has disappeared, so Hugo keeps the clocks going while trying to fix a mysterious automaton his ... Read More:

This collection is a touching look at what life in Indian country can be like. Smart and touching, it was one of those books that was impossible to put down, and left me feeling like I knew the characters. A must read!

Gene Luen Yang's low-key but heartfelt American Born Chinese seems to tell three stories at once: the traditional Chinese fable of the Monkey King; the young life of a son of Chinese immigrants; and the story of a blond-haired, blue-eyed high-schooler whose mortifying Chinese cousin visits every year.

Yang brings creative personal touches to each story: his pithy retelling of the Journey to the West (the original novel is over 2,000 pages long) presents a wonderfully sympathetic Monkey King. The third story is ... Read More:

I was initially intrigued by the idea of death recounting the story of the little girl known as the "book thief." That is what drew me to this book.

I don't read many novels anymore, but when I do, I hope to find something entertaining. Or perhaps it could offer a refreshing new style (e.g. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time). Ideally, I also want to learn something new about the world around me, such as a historical period, a certain culture, or the human condition.

I found the plot of The ... Read More:

I wanted to make this high level book available to my fifth graders who are studying the Civil War, but was concerned about the dialect being difficult for some of them to read. I purchased books for each student and then purchased the CD so they could follow along as the professionally recorded CD played enabling them to understand the "foreign" words. They love being able to see the printed word as well as hear the intent of the author. They are able to flag parts of the book as they "read" along. It is making this book club a much richer experience ... Read More:

I got as far as page 106 and couldn't waste any more time on this book. Too many random words in Spanish-just enough to wonder what the author is talking about. There were also a lot of footnotes-tiny footnotes-that made this feel like a boring school book. I tried, but couldn't finish this book. We read it for a book club and others had the same opinion.
