| I felt the author wanted me to sympathize with Mamah, but I just couldn't. She was completely spoiled and selfish. | I really enjoyed this book because of the history it presented. The characters were delightful. A very enjoyable read. I had no idea that the channel islands (off England's coast) were so isolated during WW2, nor that the German's had taken it over. There were many surprises and several quirky little stories to delight the reader. |

| It was difficult to decide what was more disappointing: the poor narrative or the incredibly poor knowledge of the history in general, and of the region Ms. Brooks writes about in her "People of the Book". Since a lot has been said about the former in other reviews, I will comment on the latter.

| I really enjoyed this book. The main characters are well written and the subject matter very interesting. I also went on line to the Hermitage Museum's web site to look at some of the paintings mentioned in the book. I liked the way the author took the reader back and forth through time in the Marina's life. Not only is this a book on what happened during the siege of Leningrad but also about aging and love of family. |
