| I've seen this film several times and I always find it disturbing because it strikes me as classic Hollywood in that though the Civil War is central to the film, at no point is slavery ever mentioned. Which is to say that the film turns on the reconciliation of North and South and their mutual interests, which come to the fore as they are fighting Mexicans. | Stylistically, this is a very interesting film from director John Ford. The film begins with alot of colorful characterizations familiar to audiences with films as diverse as "Stagecoach" and "The Searchers". There's also alot of brutal realism which would anticipate the work of Sam Peckinpah. It's also interesting that Ford contrasts the traditional western as represented by John Wayne with the new west represented by James Stewart who made a series of "psychological" westerns in and around this time. | I did not particularly liked the movie. I think it was done on the cheap, too full of cliches,macho posturing, and as usual depicted the foes of Bowie, Crockett, and other defenders of the Alamo as unconscionable, mean people, misstatements, and with omissions of truths. I personally do not recommend the movie to anyone. |

| I'm really surprised this isn't on DVD and more accessible to the public. Gregory Peck is first rate in his role as Ringo, the aging gun-fighter who's taking a hard look at life and wanting to change his ways. And Millard Mitchell was impressive in his supporting role. I loved the foreshadowing all through the picture and I was left stunned by the ending. Wasn't expecting that from a 1950's movie. I'm not a great fan of the western genre (although I'm learning to appreciate it) but this movie is beyond genre; it's a good, solid story ... Read More: |

Gregory Peck is first rate in his role as Ringo, the aging gun-fighter who's taking a hard look at life and wanting to change his ways. And Millard Mitchell was impressive in his supporting role. I loved the foreshadowing all through the picture and I was left stunned by the ending. Wasn't expecting that from a 1950's movie. | Chuck in fine form as a crusty sodbuster but a bit dour throughout. Earnest performances help carry it along but it's not quite entertainment, is it ? I don't think I can recommend buying it but should prove a worthwhile curiosity as a Wednesday night rental. |
