VHS : Shalom Sesame Show 6: Chanukah
This video teaches about Chanukah & does so in a fairly entertaining fashion. The toddler I work with loves this video. Compared to the Aleph Bet Telethon video from Shalom Sesame, this one is not nearly as entertaining or alive. This video is good for: teaching the letters on the dreidle & what they stand for, explaining why some dreidles say 'shin' and some say 'pay', introducing a few Chanukah songs, & for explaning the story of Chanukah (though I think it may have been more successful if presented in a different fashion). If you are looking for a wholesome film that is well acted with a storyline that is original and captivating, this is the film for you and your family. Set in historic America, it admirably portrays the upright pioneering values of God-fearing, hard-working American immigrants. The complex three dimensionality of the characters creates a chemistry rarely seen in good story-telling movies. Don't miss this one, the kids and you will love it.

This movie, The Last Unicorn and the Phantom Tollbooth were my favorite movies as a child. Only one is out on DVD. Unfortunately it's not this one. I know the company is making a killing on the last unicorn. This one would very easily match it. If the DVD gods are reading this please, please, please put it out on DVD! I promise to buy at least 3 copies.

VHS : The Year Without a Santa Claus
TYWSC is an animation masterpiece by the remarkable Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Rankin/Bass had a prolific stretch of productions using stop-motion puppet animation ("Animagic"), beginning with the ever-popular Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in 1962.

Many of these Rankin/Bass "Animagic" productions are interesting on several levels, since they often pulled the holiday away from religious moorings (with a couple of exceptions) and contributed to the huge holiday commercial machine (music, decorations, TV, ... Read More:

VHS : Guyana Tragedy: Story of Jim Jones
Great actors in this movie, ie..James E. Jones, Rosalind Cash, Irene Cara to say the least. I first saw this movie back in '80. I was a child then and didn't understand much but do remember this storyline being quite chilling. Now many years later I've taken a renewed interest in this story. I've been listening lately to live audio of Jones' sermons and recordings as well as archival footage.
What I don't care much about this movie is the fact that Boothe has no physical resemblance or personality of Jones. I don't think he was the better actor for ... Read More:
