| So many people seem to like this film - Madame X. I don't. I 've seen
it on television and am glad I never saw it in a theater in 1966. The cast is excellent (Lana Turner, John Forsythe, Burgess Meredith, Ricardo Montalban, Joan Whats-Her-Name)but the plot and the schmaltzy dialogue plus the tear-jerking conclusion leave me laughing and that's it. | I got this for our "movie night" group the week after Newman's death in lieu of a Woody Allen pick that was originnaly on the schedule. It was very fitting; and we had all forgotten what a great film this really is.
Gleason is superb (even with the limited screen time), George C. Scott very much holds the plot together, and Newman plays the pathetic hero so very well. "Let's play pool, Fat Man..." |

| As the next reviewer states, these are recorded in EP mode and the quality suffers, BUT WHAT A COLLECTION! I was especially pleased to see that the 10th tape was Sean O'Casey's Juno and the Paycock. Hitchcock's early films are such a joy: German Expressionism, slapstick comedy, long, long takes that show off the stage sense of the actors and Hitchcock himself, the beginnings of his particular film style, and his deep sense of social justice. | What were they thinking? Perhaps director Garry Marshall thought he could do for S&M what he'd done for the women of the evening in Pretty Woman. Wrap up an edgy topic in a big cute bow, and through humor make it palatable, even entertaining, to the masses. But you thought wrong Mr. Marshall. Actually, it is a surprisingly entertaining movie, it is just that most of the humor is unintentional. You can't believe the movie got green lighted when it was so obviously doomed to be a disaster.

| Films buffs will want to know that the Spanish R2 'Mundo Futuro' DVD is missing footage. There are four cuts totaling 2.5 minutes of missing footage:
1. The pre-credit sequence is missing. 2. Some dialoge during the press invite, round table scene. 3. When Peter Fonda explores the remains of Westworld. 4. Dialogue at the very end. Until a better version is released, your best bet is to pick up the R2 UK full frame edition which includes all of the above cuts. |
