VHS : Great Caruso
This is a highly fictionaliased and heavily sentimental portrait of the great operatic tenor .It is lavishly mounted and has many popular ingredients which all helped in making it a major commercial hit in its day.

There is the rags to riches nature of the story as Enrico Caruso rises from poverty on the back streets of Naples to becoming the darling of New York society ,overcoming the death of his mother while still a child and building a carrer in the opera houses of Europe before ... Read More:

VHS : Hello Dolly
"Hello, Dolly!" is one of those huge-budgeted musicals made after the incredible success of "The Sound of Music." Lightning was reluctant to strike twice, however, and subsequent, bloated musicals like "Paint Your Wagon," "Dr. Dolittle," "Star" and "Darling Lili" tanked at the box office. "Hello, Dolly!" seemed a safe bet. It was based on a hit Broadway show, starred Barbra Streisand -- fresh from her Oscar-winning role in "Funny Girl" -- in the title role, had a score by Jerry Herman and a script ... Read More:

VHS : Menotti - Amahl and the Night Visitors
I remember watching and loving this opera every year when I was a child. I was disappointed when the network stopped airing it. Now that Mr. Menotti has passed away, perhaps the news coverage will encourage the production of a good DVD version of this classic. Hope someone's listening!

VHS : The King and I
I lived in Thailand for 2 1/2 years in the 1990's. It was a very nice time indeed. I know that this is not good history for Thailand and in fact the film is banned in Thailand (but a bootleg copy can be found on every street corner) because of the poor history and light on it's great king, King Mongkut. To me as an American, I can see the brilliance of a Rogers and Hammerstein Musical and enjoy its wonderful story and entertainment, it is different for a Thai person. Still the art is there and I find it highly ... Read More:

3 stars just because it's missing so much content. However, I did manage to get the entire series and burn it to a dvd so, that's at least a plus. But this VHS is missing a lot of content. Hopefully MTV releases an official DVD of The Maxx. Until then I've got a copy : )

Charleston! Charleston! A group of kids have discovered their parents' childhood belongings including clothes and records. Their great uncle (S. Z. Sakall) is aghast that they would mock the 1920s and does his best to portray the era in a more favorable light.

Nanette Carter (Doris Day) is a dancer who yearns to be on the stage, but everyone recommends more training. She dutifully complies. That is, until she is offered the lead role in a show if she can sponsor it as well. She agrees, but her rich uncle is reluctant ... Read More:

Most of Nelson and Jeanette films will make you sing and smile and once
in a while make you shed a tear. I always wanted to know why my mom
cried looking at their movies years ago when i sat on her lap while they
played on tv in the early sixties. Now that im older, and have just seen
this movie, i also shed a tear for this delightfull tale of love.

VHS : Nutcracker:The Motion Picture
This, besides American Ballet Theatre's Nutcracker (done by Baryshnikov), is perhaps the truest Nutcracker in that it keeps to the original story by E.T.A. Hoffman.
The character of Drosselmeier is dark, mysterious, strange. He struggles with his relationship to Clara and as she encounters the Nutcracker hanging on the tree, sends her a dark dream as a sort of punishment. In another scene right out of Hoffman, instead of "Coffee" being danced in an Indian-style costume, the lady is a peacock! You won't find this anywhere else.
