| This film rates a 4/5 for the music. I own the DVD and VHS versions, and just want to confirm what some others have posted here:
DVD 'Mono' is 100% mono DVD 'Stereo' is 100% fake stereo (and it sounds lousy) VHS is mono in the dialogue and what appears to be the original stereo in the musical numbers plus some of the bridging dialogue I can't speak for the Laserdisc, but the musical numbers on the VHS version sound MUCH better than either track on the ... | If ever a film deserved to be released on DVD, this delightful treasure should be DVD'd at once! It amazes me it is not yet released! Maybe the reasons are copyright issues or some such film business. Fred minus Ginger are more than made up for with George Burns and Gracie Allen who are hilarious. They also demonstrate their versatility in two dance numbers with Astaire and hold their own admirably keeping up with him! | I have observed that one of the lesser known stars of the 1950's was a glamorous swimmer named Esther Williams. Her popularity had waned by the time I started going to the movies but I was reminded from time to time that she and Sonja Heiney (or whatever that ice-skating actress's name was) had a unique appeal for awhile. This Nutcracker, with Maurice Sendak visuals, is a hard act to follow. This Drosselmeyer is the one TRUE version - in my opinion. But then again: everyone is perfect in this version. If you want the ballet to come alive for as it never has before..............or if you have a child in your life whose interest in movement, music and classical style you'd like to ignite ( WITHOUT turning to some awful animation or off- the-mark hipster version of a classic) then, this is your film. | I started taking dance lessons several months ago and the Cha-Cha was one of the dances being taught. I didn't want to wait to learn this dance so I decided I'd get the tape beforehand to get a head start. The video was very good in terms of teaching the basic steps and moves. Probably too much time was spent practicing each step but I also feel the same way about my dance instructor, some people in our class do need the constant repetition but I would prefer more moves being taught.
