| What a match! Grayson, the beautiful physiognomy, clothes-model, and concert-quality singer was the best of her time (see her in "Kiss Me Kate"); and Mario has a magnificent voice. It was unfortunate that Mario was too out-of-condition to play "The Student Prince". Instead, the role went to Edmund Purdom. Also, Mario was made for the musical Carousel! None sings "If I Loved You" so well.

| There's a lot to enjoy in this goofy, perfunctory Fox backstager. The casting (fun, quirky) is the star here, trying perhaps to recapture the mood of a 1930's screwball comedy.
No one -- particularly the writers and the director -- will ever be accused of laboring too much on this one. The actors know that there isn't much drama and there isn't much comedy, but they deliver what they can. A couple of small delights: 1. | In this production, it is a feast to watch and listen! Music is playing and people are dancing from the very beginning and it does not stop until the movie does. The actors are phenominal, including the comical Donald O Connor, the robust Ethel Merman, and the seductive Marilyn Monroe, as charming as ever. If you enjoy musicals, this is a must. | I didn't realize as I watched the film the first time that it was inspired by actual lives -- Sainte-Colombe and Marin Marais are important figures in the history of music -- nor was it clear to me, until I did some research, how the film connected with important theological controversies of the 17th century. Hearing that Sainte-Colombe was "a reformer," I took that to mean that he was a Calvinist and thus was confused to see him, in a later scene, in what was clearly a Catholic church. | I bought this as a gift for my nieces (ages 2 and 4 at the time) and they both loved it. Of course, they have a facination with princess stories but my sister thought it was entertaining as well. Jim Henson was very good (in the early days of the muppets) of taking a story and giving it a fun twist. |

| I was a teenager when this came out and everyone went to see it. I was not very critical then, but remember thinking that this was nauseating. Barbra Streisand is undeniably talented but incapable of setting her vanity aside in the interest of making a decent movie. And the camera is cruel. She's too ugly to have ever been convincing as an object of passionate desire in any movie. On stage at a distance, she could get away with it.
