VHS : King of Jazz
1930's King of Jazz is the best of the early sound cycle of movie studio revues. Very few films shot completely in two-strip Technicolor survive - this is one of them. Warner Bros. probably made the most all-Technicolor films in the early sound era, but since most of them were Vitaphone the films have long since been lost in most cases.

The 1929 and 1930 early sound revues were made by the studios primarily to showcase their talent in an all-talking setting. MGM's "Hollywood Revue of 1929" started ... Read More:

VHS : Chocolate Soldier
Nobody is better than Jeanette Macdonald to be teamed with Nelson Eddy, but Rise Stevens did a pretty good job. She is beautiful and sings pretty
good...good enough to be with Nelson Eddy for the Chocolate Soldier. There
is music, drama, great costumes and nice sets. The story flows pretty
good and is pleasant to the end. Another movie that ive seen in the past
as a child that has contributed to the music surrounding me in my Adult
world. A keeper..enjoy.

I read somewhere that Miss Ball was rather ruthless in getting to play this role. I give Lucy's singing a "D". I give the opening credits an "A"...very nice art direction there. I give Robert Preston singing "Loving You" an "A". The rest of the cast is great. there is something else awkward about this film version of the musical besides Lucy's croaking through her numbers, and that is her acting! She is a cold Mame, really, the warmth and whimsy of the character Mame Dennis Burnside is hidden in this stiff performance. I also remember reading that Lucy ... Read More:

VHS : Jazz - A Film by Ken Burns
The greatest compliment to this series is that it has created a torrent of discussion and the debates are still raging. I enjoy this series so much, I watch it nearly every year.

My critique has been discussed at length, so I summarize this way:

I appreciate Wynton Marsalis' discussion of the jazz with which he is familiar. This does not qualify Wynton Marsalis to decide, for everyone else, what constitutes jazz when the question of "fusion" comes up.

Much of fusion, both then and now, is largely rhythm section ... Read More:

Hollywood has such a bad reputation among historians, it's easy to dismiss the soap-opera-ish aspect of this film out of hand. It does state at the beginning that it takes certain liberties with chronology.

But it gets the essentials right. Robert and Clara Schumann had a life so full of dramatic incidents, it does seem like the most unlikely Hollywood screenplay. They *did* begin their married life in retreat from her overbearing father. They did have eight children. Later, the young Johannes Brahms, an unknown pianist and composer *did* show ... Read More:

I ordered this supposedly rare color set thinking 23 dollars was a good price for fond memories....what I got was a 1960s-70 VHS quality colorized copies...yes the tapes are still faded and the color unnatural in spots...Hollywood can do anything digially these days but whomever is distributing and making money on this evidently does not care. Amazon please include a note specifing what one is getting on your site ..a disclaimer at least..you are too good a company for this kind of business selling tapes one can record over the airwaves!!!!Also they are coming out ...
