VHS : Survivors of the Holocaust
This sad but powerful video is a must-have for any English or History teacher dealing with the Holocaust. I *do* agree with many Holocaust survivors who urge teachers to NOT begin their units with such a film, but to use it as a tool that complements a balanced discussion of this horrific time period. I begin my unit with a study of poems from the book, "I Never Saw Another Butterfly," recommended by another teacher, and then proceed to this video. Finally, we read the book, "Night," by Elie Wiesel. ... Read More:

This remake of the 1931 filmed version of Robert Sherwood's play about the doomed romance of a WWI military officer and a streetwalker, is a classic tragic romance that sanitizes the original, but is distinguished by lovely performances and exquisite black and white cinematography. It is really a pitch perfect tearjerker for the period.

Vivien Leigh is heartbreaking as ballerina turned prostitute Myra, and if possible, even more beautiful than she was in Gone With The Wind. Her acting here is a far cry ... Read More:

Movie is long but it sure does give you a view of how poorly people were treated. It was great to see how their belief kept them strong

Some noncomplimentary reviews have been written here by people who, from what I conclude after reading their comments, did not actually serve in Vietnam. I did serve with the USMC around the DaNang area in 1969-70. After seeing most of the Vietnam war movies, I feel that this movie is the most realistic of how it really was over there. Why is there still no DVD of this movie?

I've always enjoyed this movie, except for one thing. The actor who plays Willie Keith- Robert Francis- is awful. I think a wooden indian could have delivered a better performance. One of the plot elements of the movie is that Ensign Keith is well connected, Francis must have been as well, because he never deserved being awarded this pivotal role.

Everyone else does a creditable job,and Jose Ferrer and Humphrey Bogart are outstanding.

The movie ends just at the right point- not like Wouk's overlong book, where ... Read More:

VHS : Roots 6 Video Box Set
Perhaps the most famous TV miniseries of all time. Played for eight straight evenings in January of 1977. The country practically came to a halt during that time slot every evening. Over 130 million views tuned in to watch this amazing story of Alex Haley's family's roots and history. It has been translated into 28 languages since. While the story and technology may seem a little outdated today (how can it not?), this is one story worth watching to gain a better understanding our country's history and where we have come from. In many ways it is the ... Read More:

Being an avid reader of military history, and knowing someone with eyewitness knowledge of Audie Murphy's wartime exploits. I'd categorize the film as being fairly true to the autobiographical book, even if a bit "Hollywoodized" by a theme song written for especially the film, and by the sometimes hokey acting of Murphy's supporting characters. Murphy was, indeed, a hero. A hero who saw and experienced indescribable horror while still in his late teens. His persona was forged by many months of combat, and his eyes - the eyes of a man who'd seen too much ... Read More:

Great W.W.2 movie. With William Holden a great actor. I sure do miss him. He puts these new actors to shame. Good movie for any war buff to add to his or hers collection.

I saw this movie when I was a kid of course and now that I teach US History was hoping that it might work in place of the ever popular Saving Private Ryan. The movie is all about the background of the boys, how they grew up, the relationship they had as brothers, their fighting spirit and how they tried to make sure they stayed together in the military (in this case the Navy) during the war. I have to be honest, since I was looking at this film for use in my class I was hoping for more story of them on the ship but that part takes all of about 10 minutes. But ... Read More:

VHS : Love Letters
This insanely romantic movie, fueled by Victor Young's repetitive but unforgettable love theme, has some of the same sort of overripe, unintentionally hilarious dialogue that makes "The Fountainhead" such an entertaining howler of a right wing melodrama, but Jones and Cotton, with their uniquely delicate emotional interplay, are an irresistable couple and their authenticity saves and sells the movie.

Though couched as a romantic melodrama (with elements borrowed from "Cyrano de Bergerac") Rand still manages to interlard some of her trademark loony political ... Read More:
