VHS : Francis in the Navy
This is the sixth and final film of the series produced by Universal that included Donald O'Connor, and director Arthur Lubin, who created the sequence. It would be charitable to state that this entry is up to the best of its antecedents, as O'Connor's tongue-tied routine as the chowderheaded sidekick of Francis the talking mule has become rather exhausting for audiences by the time of this release. Army lieutenant Peter Stirling (O'Connor) is advised by Francis that the mule has been "drafted" into ... Read More:

VHS : Edge of Darkness
1943's "Edge of Darkness" portrays the acute plight of a small Norwegian village trapped under the thumb of brutal Nazi occupation during the Second World War. The presentation by veteran director Lewis Milestone is especially poignant; modern viewers must remember that the liberation of Norway was still an uncertain two years off when the movie was released.

Errol Flynn leads in an understated but solid performance as an ordinary and underachieving fisherman who is forced by circumstances to ... Read More:

VHS : The Sound of Music
I've loved this movie since I was very young and was so happy when I could buy it on DVD for such a cheap price! I love the music and the story but what I loved about this version is the reunion of all of the actors and actress' still around in 2005! Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Charmain Carr, Nicholas Hammond, Heather Menzies, Duane Chase, Angela Cartwright, Debbie Turner and Kym Karath.
They all looked so happy to be with each other again and they made it look like they were the Von Trapp family again!

VHS : Man Who Never Was
This is one of the most meticulously well told espionage stories ever!

Clifton Webb gives a stunning performance as the cold Lt. Commander Mantagu, whose mission is to create a diversion tactic to lure the Germans away from the real Italian location the British plan to invade. So he thinks of the most daring, sophisticated and simple plan of them all: to have a dead British officer carrying top secret information falling on the hands of the Germans. But the plan is not easy and every detail must be calculated with care ... Read More:

VHS : Heaven Knows Mr Allison
I remember in an interview with Robert Mitchum prior to his death when asked his favorite film without missing a beat he said "Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison". This is high praise from someone who made such classics as "Night of the Hunter" and "The Sundowners". After watching it you can see why. The film is essentially a two character story (the occupying Japanese soldiers are in essence extras) which gives Mitchum the opportunity to stretch his acting muscles. As a co-star you can't have one better than Deborah Kerr. The film also ... Read More:

VHS : Blood Alley
Well, I guess I'm out of step with most reviewers on this one. I'm a great fan of the Duke, but this is one of his worst films. I didn't buy the plot for a minute. The scenes between Lauren Bacall and Wayne show zero chemistry. Frankly, much as I love Bacall's early films, she never quite made the transition from alluring ingenue to fully adult actress. This film is Exhibit A as to why her career never made it to the heights it might have. I don't think Wayne's conversations with the invisible "Baby" work either. They are annoying ... Read More:

VHS : Golden Earrings
Marlene Dietrich plays the gypsy Lydia, and in her raggedy clothes, black wig, and dark makeup, gives a whole other take on what sexy is all about. (Her gorgeous legs and bare feet get plenty of look-see throughout the picture.) Set near the beginning of WW II in the Black Forest of Germany, Dietrich helps Ray Milland escape the Nazis and obtain a secret poison gas formula. The plot is a bit thin, but both Milland and especially Dietrich put everything into their roles. The golden earrings are a prop used to help disguise Milland, and when ... Read More:

Unbelievebly great movie. One of the best movie I have ever seen. Done with great actors. It is well done and leave aside the bloody scenes of the war which we do not need to see and appreciate not seeing. The movie has been very appreciated by the family because of the excellent performance of the actors and the very good script.

The transfer of this film appears to be the same MPEG transfer as the one used for the DVD version. It DOES NOT appear to be a new 1080p 4k re-mastering of the film. This is not to say that it doesn't look much better in Blu-Ray than it does on DVD. But it is not, evidently, a brand new 1080p 4k transfer made expressly for Blu-Ray release. This can cause some problems, depending on your display system and settings. You may have to select a different input palette or profile on your display, or adjust your settings.

If your system is setup ... Read More:

VHS : War and Peace
I bought the Russian version of "War and Peace" from you, a 3-DVD boxed set. The work is magnificent, on the massive scale one seldom sees nowadays. True to Tolstoy in every respect, a viewing pleasure of rare proportions. The actors play their parts with consummate skill, so much so that they imprint themselves on to your memory. Anyone who has a sense of history - not merely of Napoleonic-era history - should see this film and derive from it the degree of pleasure that I and my family derived from it. Bill (Australia)
