Wayne avoided military service during World War Two, and it shows in the movie. For example, Wayne repeatedly uses his rifle to gesture toward someone, a flagrant mistake that a recruit with one week of training would not make. Appropriately, at the movie's end the sun sinks in the east as Wayne and a Vietnamese child gaze out to sea. The movie's grasp of the war in Vietnam is as confused as its grasp of geography.

I have the original from TV that I taped many, many years ago and have used in my classroom for over 20 years. When I ordered the VHS tape a few years back I was shocked by the number of scenes that were deleted in order to condense the movie to one videotape. These scenes were critical to the development of the plot and make a huge difference in following Paul's descent. I was very disappointed because I thought the original was an excellent movie for the classroom.

This wonderful Italian film shot during the 1990's, tells the story of a group of misfit Italian soldiers from various parts of Italy sent to occupy a Greek Island during World War II of zero strategic importance.

Through a series of mishaps, they lose a soldier's beloved pet donkey, and their essential two-way radio, effectively cutting them off and leaving them forgotten during the war.

Left stranded on the seemingly deserted isle, they discover they are not alone once the inhabitants ... Read More:

What happens when you mix the late Jack Benny, Carole Lombard, Robert Stack with Adolph Hitler? One very funny comedy. The script is great, very fast moving, and truly enjoyable to watch. Black and white never looked so elegant.

And don't forget to watch the extra feature, too. Very funny situational comedy called 'The Rounder.'

You may have never heard of it, but it is a classic to watch and to share with your friends and family.

VHS : The African Queen
What a work of art! This is one of the best movies of all time. When the spinster missionary woman (Hepburn) must TOLERATE Mr. Arnaut (Bogart)
in their life-threatening trip down the river in a beat-up old boat, The African Queen, the fun begins. She can drum up no respect for this man--until she realizes that he is an intelligent person who may be able to save their lives by his cool wit. He good naturedly sloughs off her constant criticism, while she endures his slovenly ways and colorful language. At some point they start ... Read More:

Martin Sheen, Jack Albertson and Patricia Neal star in this film, with few other supporting cast members.

Sheen is a returning army corporal following the Second World War. Jack Albertson plays his father, a harsh, dictatorial man who is inclined to lay down the law in the household. His mother, Patricia Neal, is his long-suffering wife who manages to get her licks in. A dysfunctional family, ... Read More:

VHS : Churchill And The Generals
The only bad news is that this challenging and brilliantly scripted and acted film is but a low-budget TV drama. Once that has been taken on board and expectations adjusted the point should be ignored in much the same way as we happily watch classics such as 'Brief Encounter' or 'Casablanca' even though 'unfortunately' shot in monochrome.
The essence is the wartime mood in both the UK and America which is caught to perfection by actors most of whom had actually lived through those difficult times. The veracity these fine performers bring ... Read More:

VHS : Battleground (1949)
There were lots of war movies made during and after WWII, and many of them starred Van Johnson. Most of them chose to look at the heroic side of battle or the lives of the people at home supporting the troops. Battleground is different. It examines the 101st Airborne Division during the Battle of the Bulge, a group of men fighting to stay alive and in good humor amid death, destruction, and fear. This is a grim story and much more realistic than the typical MGM film.

The all star cast includes Johnson, John Hodiak, Ricardo Montalban, George Murphy, Herbert ... Read More:

169.Lassiter starring: Tom Selleck, Jane Seymour, Lauren Hutton, Bob Hoskins, Joe Regalbuto
directed by: Roger Young

VHS : Lassiter
This is a much overlooked crime thriller, with a delightful combination of charm and suspense. Selleck plays a succesful cat burglar in London just before the outbreak of WW11, coerced into helping a brutally determined British cop, brilliantly played by Bob Hoskins, into stealing a fortune of diamonds from the Nazis. The Nazis are suitably menacing, Hoskins roguishly deceitful, and the finale has a clever and unsuspected twist. All in all, one of the better crime thriller's I have seen.

VHS : Photographing Fairies
Introduction: `Photographing Fairies' is an obscure British film from '98 that to my knowledge was never released to American theaters. It was available in limited quantities on VHS but has yet to appear on a REGION 1 DVD.

This probably shouldn't be too surprising when you look at the subject matter of the film. Unlike the Emerald Isles who have an ancient and ongoing oral and written tradition concerning the "wee folk", American audiences are vastly untutored in the topic of the intangible realm of the "Secret Commonweath" and its myriad of inhabitants. Tales of fairies, ... Read More:
