| Upon seeing the restored and re-released film in 1981, I placed this silent at the top of my list of favorite foreign films from the silent era. The use of triptych, color, and daring camera angles is breathtaking! Gance was one of film's innovative pioneering geniuses. Although at times the acting is a bit stilted, the viewer must remember that these actors are turn-of-the-century schooled; today's acting style is far different and more relaxed. So I will just say that, bogged down though it may be with a dreadful and forgettable romance that has little bearing on our boys, the merits far outweigh the slight defects. This is one of the better historical films made about the war in the Pacific. and the 'thirties and 'forties aviation navy. I was in naval aviation near the time this was written about, and know the aircraft depicted. The depictions are accurate; one of the rare movies not to throw in the wrong airplane in a battle scene. | What a glorious, uplifting movie this is. A great cri de coeur against war and hatered, and in favor of tolerance and peace. That the message it presents is, by this point, somewhat of a given does nothing to diminish its importance.

| For some reason, THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE (directed in 1936 by Michael Curtiz) is always forgotten when people talk about Errol Flynn's movies. | This film is very close to the nerve centers of practically all Marines because it so very realistically depicts their experiences in either boot camp and/or Vietnam. There isn't one that didn't feel a mysterious tingle in the back of his neck and a shiver down his spine when he first heard Lee Ermy calling cadence in the boot camp segment of the movie. Nuf said about the film except to say that the video and audio transfer to blu-ray is outstanding. The anamorphic treatment that allows it to fit 16X9 TVs is excellent. Makes it seem even ... | Like the other reviewers, I found this documentary to be fascinating. If you are a Coppola fan, it's a can't miss. That said, I have a couple of caveats to the unconditional raves given by other reviewers: First, if you already have the VHS version, the DVD "extras" are pretty weak (of course, if you no longer have a VHS player, you may want to pick up a copy of the DVD anyway).
