VHS : Edward II
This movie was barely above atrocious. The movie is based on a play by Christopher Marlowe. The play, Edward II, is very good! This movie does not do it justice. It is very tacky and poorly made. The first thing a viewer is forced to watch is an unnecessary love scene between two men. The movie itself is not set in any one time period. It is confusing to try and figure out where the characters are, or when they are. The acting is terrible as well. It is more like a soap opera then a movie ... Read More:

I initially found this film while watching Henry & June. It's one of the films they watch at the movie theater. If you are a fan of early film or a history buff into pre-Nazi Germany movies... or a collector of homosexual or feminist films... then this is definitely worth purchasing. An interesting fact is that this film is pieced together in parts because the original was destroyed by the Nazis. It was reformatted from various copies, so you will see some sections with different types of subtitles.. ... Read More:

This movie is quite simply perfect. Life and death, love and friendship they're all explored here in some detail. There is so much more here than just a film for people looking for gay issues explored. Here we have the story of the fictionalized last days of Frankenstein director James Whale, but more specifically what we have is the story of a friendship between two characters who need something from each other. One who doesn't know how to live, and the other who doesn't know how to die. They both have something to ... Read More:

VHS : Personal Best
When Personal Best came out in 1982, at about the same time as Chariots of Fire - another running movie - I loved it. But seeing it again, it's lost something. Now, all I see is Mariel Hemingway whining and crying through the whole movie. I think what caught me the first time was the great photography, Mariel's hot bod, and Scott Glenn's great lines about comparing coaching the women's team to Chuck Noll coaching the Pittsburgh Steelers. All three are still great. Just don't expect much else.

VHS : Naked Lunch
Conspiring monster bugs. . .ejaculating typewriters. . .inter-zone intrigue. . .
As a statement on addiction--interesting.
As a statement on writing--interesting.
As entertainment--duh?
Well-acted, well-made, but just, at times, so flat-out weird that it makes it, well--not enjoyable.

"...The screenplay was written by Edward Albee directed by Tony Richardson and star Rudolph Nureyev as Vaslav. Claude Jade as Romola
and Paul Scofield as Diagilev..."

When a Texas university buys a virtually new video--one that will probably play for "years"--and you know that the movie will be viewed
by a rather sophisticated audience--it makes you feel happy indeed.

In the opinion of this reviewer the film production is gorgeous.
It reminds the viewer of what it means to be human.

48.Boys in the Band starring: Kenneth Nelson, Peter White, Leonard Frey, Cliff Gorman, Frederick Combs
directed by: William Friedkin
December 06, 1980
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Boys in the Band
This is truly one of the great plays/films of all time. The bonus features are wonderful except for the commentary by William Friedkin. Friedkin is not watching the film thus not giving the viewer insight to what we are viewing. In fact, some of the words from Friedkin are already in other parts of the DVD. Too bad, it would have been an over the top release if this had not been done in this fashion. (It's also a little boring.) Also, Cliff Gorman's year of birth is incorrect. It is 1936 not 1926.

49.Noir & Blanc starring: Catherine Belkhodja, Marc Berman, Arnaud Carbonnier, Isaach De Bankolé, Francis Frappat
directed by: Claire Devers
July 12, 1995
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Noir & Blanc
Moody and atmospheric, this directoral debut by Claire Devers tranplants a Tennessee Williams story to 1980s France. Something may have gotten lost in the translation. The story of a repressed accountant who finds pleasure in the pain provided him by a sullen African masseur is disturbing, but ultimately too sketchy. If you're going to plumb the darkest depths, there's at least a strong argument for going into some detail. No, not more torture scenes, but some hint of the actual relationship of the two protagonists might help.

50.The Opposite of Sex starring: Christina Ricci, Martin Donovan, Lisa Kudrow, Lyle Lovett, Johnny Galecki

Christina Ricci is wonderful in this early movie. Some reviewers have criticized the performance of Lisa Kudrow, but I thought she added greatly to the story line.
