VHS : Wilde
Brian Gilbert's "Wilde" stands as a realiable version of the Irish writer's later years. Wilde's relationship with Alfred Douglas, Robert Ross, his wife Constance and many other characters is consistent, and agrees with reports left by contemporaries who knew well Oscar Wilde and his circle. Good performances by Stephen Fry, Jude Law, Michael Sheen and Tom Wilkinson. The latter, as the marquis of Queensberry, is outstanding - although portraying such a clichéed character is obviously a much easier ... Read More:

VHS : Norman Is That You
I'm old enough to have seen Norman... Is That You? in first release. When Norman announced that he was so depressed and confused that he joined the Navy, it hit home. You see, the first time I saw the film I was on the USS Oklahoma City, in the Navy and dealing with my own homosexuality. It helped me to accept myself. Later, when I finally worked up the nerve to start coming out, it helped again.

A previous reviewer wrote of how true it was to the experience of coming out in a black family. I'm white, and ... Read More:

VHS : Even Cowgirls Get the Blues
Uma Thurman is not a very good actress. She's tall, & reasonably attractive, & sometimes blonde, but she was the poster-girl for the Uber-hip set in the late 80's/early 90's so for that set, she was a perfect choice as Sissy Hankshaw. Having read & loved this book, I knew she was not a good choice, and she was subsequently was named Worst Actress of 1993 for her terrible attempt to portray Cissy. Likewise, Rain aka Rain- bow aka Rain Phoenix was also miscast, as well as not being talented enough to pull off the role of ... Read More:

Luchino Visconti`s Death In Venice (1971)

Alvy Singer: "You're not going to come back to New York?"
Annie Hall: "What's so great about New York? It's a dying city, you read Death in Venice."
(Woody Allen's ANNIE HALL, 1979)

Luchino Visconti's movie is not only a fine adaptation of Thomas Mann's celebrated novel, but it's one of those few films that succeeded in adding another dimension to the literature they stemmed from. Amongst those works I can cite Kubrick's 2001: Space Odyssey, Tarkovski's ... Read More:

VHS : Wild Reeds
André Téchiné's name is synonymous with great French films. He is best known for My Favorite Season (1993) and Wild Reeds (1994), both of which are included in the recent release of the Andre Techine Boxset. Set in a boarding school in the Southwest of France in 1962, Wild Reeds (Les Roseaux sauvages) tells the story of a ménage à trois between four French youths during the political turmoil of the Algerian War. François (Gaël Morel) and Maïté (Élodie Bouchez) are close friends who share a love for French cinema. Maïté is interested in becoming ... Read More:

VHS : Victor Victoria
For anyone who thinks that Julie Andrews is nothing more than a mere song and dance routine, or the voice behind that infectiously annoying `hills are alive' song I have only one thing to say to you; watch `Victor/Victoria'. I happened to stumble onto this film last night and I have thought of nothing else since. Sure, it has yet to be 24 hours but honestly, it is the ONLY thing that I have thought of since the credits began to roll. As a whole the film is adorable, but its strongest part is none other than Julie Andrews. Her astonishing performance is quite probably ... Read More:

VHS : Get Real
Let's not muck around - this is excellent cominig of age stuff. Some of the acting needs work but get over that. It is a story of unrequited love with an impossible outcome becoming suddenly a reality with infinite possibilities. Steven spends time in public toilets seeking gay encounters and he finds them...school uniform and all. He gets more than he bargained for when John, the school hottie turns up...talk about awkward. You could suspect a trap, gay bashing, gay outing...but no, John is emabarrassed and awkward. The relationship starts and stops and stutters. John wants ... Read More:

VHS : Strawberry & Chocolate - - Subtitled in English
I won't bother with plot points and such since lots of other reviewers have already done so, but I will say that this film is definitely worthy of the accolades and positive reviews it has received. I was particularly struck by the performance of Jorge Perugorría as the gay artist Diego. Perugorria's performance draws you in whether he is being sly and bitchy or indignant and passionate. His unrequited love for David (Vladimir Cruz) is both sweetly naïve as well as crushingly sad. I won't give away the final scene, but I will say that without Perugorria's stellar performance throughout the ... Read More:

VHS : Gypsy (1993)
It looked good on paper: Powerhouse performer Bette Midler playing the most famous role in musical theater, directed by Emile Ardolino, the guy who turned "Dirty Dancing" into a national phenomenon. So what went wrong? The truth is, Midler simply isn't a good enough actress to capture the subtleties of as complex a character as Momma Rose. She's all big eyes and broad gestures, waving arms and manic mood swings; it's a community theater performance, going for the obvious at every turn. Is Rose manic and driven at times? Yes, of course; her father calls her a "crazy woman" in an early scene. ... Read More:
