If only the director and screenwriter were among them! This film version of the Broadway play about gay friends who spend three summer weekends together is incredibly cliché, forced, and feels anything but spontaneous.

Old friends getting together could be interesting, but all these people talk about is being gay and it gets old fast. There isn't one line of dialogue that is believable or one character that rings true; they're too glib and there's no connection between them or with ... Read More:

"Silverlake Life: The View from Here"

Life with AIDS

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

AIDS has been part of the subjects of gay movies for many years now. We cannot forget how the disease devastated our numbers and took beautiful people from us. There is no question that AIDS has influenced the way we act and think and even though it may no longer be a death sentence, we must not forget that there s still no cure and that we must live cautiously. Looking at "Silverlake ... Read More:

This movie is disturbing and interesting with a great performance by Alicia Witt. This film is actually based on the murder of Anna Brackett by Cindy Collier and Shirley Wolf. There is also the book "Little Girl Lost" by Joan Merriam about the killing. The girls killed Anna within hours of meeting each other. Afterward, one of the teen killers wrote in her diary about killing Anna and described it as "fun." Read the book if you can find it (it's out of print) then see this movie!

VHS : Skin Deep (1994) (Sub)
In light of the recent Oscar win for Hillary Swank, this film becomes grander in its significance. Midi Onodera had the courage to not only talk about transexuality, homosexuality, fetishism and drag culture in her film but her casting choices were just as courageous. Her lead, Keram Malicki-Sanchez is not only playing a woman who feels she is a man trapped in a woman's body, but Keram actually IS, in reality a male actor. Although the film has the usual problems with pacing, lighting and storyline that many first time ... Read More:

Writer/director/actress Helen Lesnick tries to write, direct and actor in this film. She wears too many hats in this film.

Lesnick plays Rachel, a woman who escapes NYC after a bad break-up with a former girlfriend Reggie (In one of the best preformances in the film, Michele Greene).Lesnick mis-casted herself in her role. This mis-casting is the first nail in the coffin of this comedy

She goes to stay with her hip jewish California mother (Mayberry RFD"s Arlene Golonka) who hooks her a blind date with ... Read More:

SPOILERS AHEAD!

This is a nice surprise of a movie--heartfelt without being smarmy, intelligent, literate, witty, quirky, and shot in a lovely wooded area. It's about a man in New York who comes back to his native Montana to care for his ailing grandfather. The man is also gay but unattached, though an old flame tries to get together with him again. A more fascinating character is called Pike (Eric Schweig), a Native American who runs the general store but is scared of what he feels for the prodigal fellow, played by Arye Gross. ... Read More:
