"Sebastiane"

A Homoerotic Epic

Amos Lassen

I understand that when Derek Jarman's "Sebastiane" was released in 1976 it caused quite uproar. It is not like a regular movie and is more of a fantasy that is soaked with homoerotic and sadomasochistic imagery which is played out against the beautiful Sardinian coast. The dialog is in Latin and it adds to the sense of mystery of the film. Hovering over the film is a sense of sexual desire and yearning. There is also ... Read More:

VHS : Stonewall
This film is the best documentation of the Stonewall Riots in New York City in 1969. Wonderful acting, writing, and direction, one truely cares for these characters as we know the inevitable outcome at the end of the movie. Some have said that the script isn't based on fact, but I have done a lot of research on the Stonewall Riots, and I have to say the script is pretty much accurate. There are some pretty intense scenes and some surprise plot twists as well. Sit back and enjoy a wonderful film on our gay ... Read More:

This movie is not for everyone especially the multiplex type of movie goers. It's a minimalist style of dialogue and characters' conversation after their one night stand. The conversation touches from coming out, self discovery, and sexual identiy. It's worth to explore such conversations if we ever look inside of ourselves.

VHS : The Truth About Jane
Of all of the "coming out" films I've seen, this has got to be one of the worst, in spite of the cast. Spend your time and money on something more worth while. This is a total waste of time AND money.

Vendor was great, however, in getting film to me on time and in good condition, as advertised. Would recommend the vendor, just not the film.

How many people have led better lives thanks to dear Quentin Crisp? As a young fey gay man in the 1980's coping with AIDS and society that basically thought my friends and I deserved to die, Crisp was a gift from above. I read ALL of his books and he saved my life- not with gooey "gay is great" style PC posturing, but with an unvarnished wisdom that taught me the gay facts of life.

Like how I would never lead a normal life and that I should be gratful for that because normal life is bloody awful.

VHS : Velvet Goldmine
I was surprised because I don't usually like these types of flashy films but I enjoyed Velvet Goldmine. It's an intense yet relaxing film that you can watch without having to actually think. It's hard to explain but this film actually takes you in so far that you'll question if your sober or high. The set is amazing, the custumes are shocking, the actors are dazzling and the stage performances are wonderful. VG does have some problems though. The plot is loose and there are some slow parts put in for filler. This is not a film ... Read More:

This attempt at making a "thriller", shot primarily within the west San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, is intended to create suspense in a viewer, but sentimentality that lurks upon the sidelines quite often usurps the scenario, and while generally suitable for the plotline characterizations, it also serves to soften the film's narrative effect, principally due to hackneyed elements that mottle the tale of a police detective's endeavour to defend himself against the stratagems of a professional assassin. A Los Angeles Police ... Read More:

VHS : Chuck & Buck
This movie, if you can call it that , is about the lamest thing I've ever seen---especially given the bait--"twisted and funny" or some such sentiment which appears on the package.

I saw this about 5 or 6 years ago, so my memory for all the details is shot; however, my friend and I both give it a zero ---for zero ideas, zero artistic integrity, zero effect...you get my point....

This is the Emperor's New Clothes of the indie movie industry...SOMETHING'S supposed to be there, but sadly, it isn't.
