VHS : Swoon (1992)
Tom Kalin's 1992 film is a landmark of what Ruby Rich famously called "the new Queer Cinema," and though it's filled with flaws, it's so gorgeous and haunting that it stays with you long after you've forgotten other films that are objectively better. Like ROPE or COMPULSION before it, SWOON seems to dramatize what was known for decades as the Crime of the Century, the morder of fourteen year-old Bobby Franks by two brilliant and wealthy Chicago college students, Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, who ... I found it entertaining and interesting from a historical prospective, with a few interviews that allowed a glimpse of the real person, otherwise not much substance. My feel was that the way they approached was from a voyeuristic angle rather than one looking to gain insight.

A very raw movie on the powerful role in people's lives of emotional dependencies on others, on how those dependencies develop and on how these higher in a relationship hierarchy exploit the dependencies for manipulation. The drama of the dependencies is underscored with sex and murder. The movie brings to mind Shakespearean plays such as Hamlet or better Titus Andronicus (no, not in the Julie Taymor edition). I actually ran across this movie in France.

Let's get to the bottom of things. Rupert Graves is the only reason to watch this film. The movie is only slightly entertaining with Graves being the true reason.

No disrespect to Mackintosh (I've seen him in other things and think he's a good actor) but he didn't do it for me in this. He wasn't convincing as a transexual let alone a woman. He didn't even look like a woman but like a man in make-up. For this movie to be more realistic they could have picked a more feminine-looking male lead or at least a man that ... Read More:

This is far and away the worst gay-themed movie I have ever seen. The film is intercut with the lead character laying there shirtless speaking to the camera with his hands up over his head, and all the while we can see his underarm hair in soggy, knotted clumps. If that isn't enough, he's butt ugly. Truly gross.

The film paints the story of two actors, from their first encounter at school in the Twenties through their success as stars of the Peking Opera, difficulties during the Japanese occupation, the Communist takeover in 1949 and the traumas of the Cultural Revolution in the Sixties...

For the so-called Fifth Generation of Chinese filmmakers, the film touches new ground on two fronts... In the first place, though it does not avoid from acknowledging the sufferings under the old regime, it takes an embittered view of Communist ... Read More:

A feelgood movie that only the French could make. Or maybe the Italians. I saw it on TV and hugged myself with so much glee I bought the DVD. The clothes are stylish, the setting sunny and the outcome just right. Alain Chabat is marvellous as the spoiled but charming cuckold, and the two women are perfectly cast for sparks to fly. A romantic comedy for the 21st century.

98.Desert Hearts starring: Andra Akers, Sheila Balter, Brenda Beck, Dean Butler (II), Patricia Charbonneau

The movie was a bit melodramatic but very effective in making it's point. As a woman who was happily married for 27 of 29 years and only discovered my "true" sexuality at almost 50yrs old, I can relate to the hesitancy of pursing this type of relationship. Based on my experience, I found it depicted a fairly realistic view of a female to female relationship.

VHS : Ludwig
I have read a considerable amount of material on the life of the tragic Ludwig II of Bavaria. Enough to be totally captivated by the man and his dedication to a life of art and music. For sure, he had many flaws like other leaders, but he was a man made for a future era and was born before his time. This Visconti film had tremendous potential to bring out the truth about this famous eccentric who was in love with the night and was only interested in building castles to fill a romantic vision of Germanic mythology. Unfortunately it fails to communicate properly about the man ... Read More:
