I am the credited director and co-producer of this documentary. I was surprised to see that Amazon actually has the video, I thought it was long gone. No DVD's, too bad. I drifted onto Amazon because a good buddy of mine loved this era and I wanted to get a copy for him. Glad to see that Girl Groups, The Story of a Sound still lives, such as it is.

This film took almost a year of my life, a very stressful year at that since it is always difficult to juggle the creative storytelling aspect of ... Read More:

I usually love to show Eyewitness DVDs for my science classes. The kids enjoy them and they usually remain engaged. This video, however, did not keep my students interested for longer then 10 min. The graphics are very outdated and some of the information seemed pointless (comparision of dinos to building machinery). I realize they cannot have live shots, but the claymation was obviously far older then the dvd production. A few CGI scenes would have helped immensely.

VHS : The Story of English, Programs 1-9
This is an informative and engaging series that was brilliantly done in 1986. It traces the evolution of the English language. I want to buy this and use it but I can't believe that it isn't on DVD. A series this good (though some parts of it are a little dated) is something everyone who speaks English should see. Five stars are not enough.

VHS : Brief History of Time
A very fine and intriguing documentary from Errol Morris about the life and work of physicist/celebrity Stephen Hawking, who revolutionized the way we think about the universe in his monumental book of the same name. The film is really divided into two stories, the life of Hawking as he struggles to overcome his paralysis, and the brilliant work he achieved in spite of his physical limitations. One gets the impression that had Hawking never became ill, he wouldn't have been as compelled to carry out the kind rigorous intellectual work that he of course did carry ... Read More:

When some people use the word "documentary" they seem to imbue it with an expectation of total objectivity--as if one could eliminate all traces of cultural experience from one's makeup and discover a shining path of ultimate "truth" simply by the act of becoming a filmmaker. Nonsense. We are all a product of our times and of the culture in which we were raised and educated. Documentaries are always, always, always selective. There is no such thing as total objectivity, either in writing or in filmmaking.

That said, this is an enormously valuable effort ... Read More:
