Now I own the (old) record, the CD, and the video. This is the greatest ethnic musical ever. I saw it first in New York in the 70's. Even though there were threats of violence, no one left the theater during the performance, and everyone left at the end - singing!

I have shown the video to my classes - every year during Black History Month and a couple of times during the year, and the students love it. They sit still, captured by the performance, the very gripping music.

VHS : Latcho Drom
Latcho Drom is mesmerizing, the people magical and the music unforgettable.

There is no dialogue, but this does nothing to detract from the film's integrity or entertainment value. Although Rom diaspora has resulted in the Roma living in just about every country on earth, Latcho Drom provides the viewer with a coup d'oeil of the Roma people in Africa, Egypt, Turkey, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, France and Spain.

The Romanian Roma (the two are mutually exclusive), instantly pulled ... Read More:

VHS : Cops: Too Hot for TV
This is what you already saw on tv except with the profanity unbleeped and nudity unblurred. A death scene involving a family murder/suicide is rather sobering at the end.

I too was captured by this film for some reason. I saw it recently while on a trip in Sweden (it was one of the few shows on television that I could understand!)
The story of Cheebee stole my heart. It's a perfect underdog tale where even the smallest creature can survive with a little help from friends and an amazing amount of courage. Go Cheebee!

How many editions are there going to be? They have special editions, ultimate, anniversary, etc. Instead of coming out with the same movie over and over again, how about putting some more classics out there. The African Queen, Cavalcade, Samson and Delilah and The Uninvited, to name just 4, still aren't on DVD yet!

VHS : Alive: 20 Years Later
This is a documentary, narrated by Martin Sheen, which focuses on the lives of those who survived an October 1972 plane crash high in the Andes mountains. The plane had been carrying the Uruguayan rugby team, their friends and families. Forty five people had been on board the plane, when it took off from Montevideo, Uruguay on its way to Santiago, Chile for a rugby match. Only sixteen would survive.

In December of 1972, the sixteen survivors were discovered after they had spent approximately seventy days high up in the Andes mountains. ... Read More:

VHS : A Night to Remember: The Sinking of the Titanic
There's not much more to be said about this, the *definitive* Titanic movie.

But be careful about the DVD. Mine "rotted", and is now unplayable. Search the Web - it seems to be a common problem. Criterion replaces any unplayable copies free of charge. Just be sure to check this disc every now and then - it's a gem.

VHS : War Room (Sp)
I first saw "The War Room" back when I was a Democrat in the middle nineties and it struck me then as an excellent documentary. My initial assessment remains accurate today even though the politicizing of James Carville now repulses me. This documentary fulfills every expectation. It takes a snapshot at an isolated point in time and conveys a bevy of information about an era. We discover (or re-discover as the case may be) Bill Clinton along with the folks who orchestrated his 1992 campaign. "The War Room" also is an excellent primary source document ... Read More:
