VHS : Breathless (1983)
It took me a second viewing to really appreciate this film. Since then I have watched it many times.

This is one of the rare movies where Richard Gere has an equally attractive co-star (Valerie Kaprisky). Intersection with Sharon Stone would be another example.

Richard and Valerie are hard to beat as pure eye candy. They apparently agreed, as word has it that they embarked on a tempestuous affair after this film. I believe she was only nineteen when the movie was made. ... Read More:

VHS : Shaft (1971)
Now this movie is one baad muther-shut-your mouth! I thought this was an excellent movie that tried to portray the life of a private detective in the Harlem of the early 70's in a gritty and hence more realistic manner. As a result, this movie is certainly dated and unmistakenably of that time and place as witnessed by the lingo and slang used liberally throughout and yet I found it still very enjoyable to watch even today.

This cat Shaft reminded me a lot of Humphrey Bogart's character ... Read More:

VHS : It's Alive
In "celebration" of the Halloween spirit, my wife and I watched a couple of old horror flicks in recent days. As a lark, one of our selections was Larry Cohen's IT'S ALIVE. I had not seen the film in about 20 years, and I knew perfectly well it was not exactly a class act. But I was looking for modest, guilty-pleasure diversion.

It was a diversion, but not altogether a pleasure. Made in 1973/74, it absolutely REEKS of the sensibilities of that fashion-challenged time. Everyone smokes...everywhere. ... Read More:

VHS : The Exorcist (The Version You've Never Seen)
OK, you've all seen this classic unless you've been living on Mars since 1973. And don't bother even watching, much less purchasing any of the sequels. But this slightly extended version attempts to add a few more minutes to elaborate on Linda Blair's central Regan teenage character before she "involuntarily spirals down" into complete possession. After all, the primary viewer empathy should have always been on Regan and viewer association with the Chris MacNeil character. But instead, the director spent too much footage on incidentals, ... VHS : Fellini Satyricon
The best way to understand director Federico Fellini's audacious 1968 film Satyricon (also known as Fellini Satyricon, because 1967 saw the release of Satyricon by fellow Italian filmmaker Gian Luigi Polidoro) is within the context of its year of release. That pivotal year saw the release of such indelible film classics as The Graduate, Planet of the Apes, Night Of The Living Dead, and 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Satyricon is very much in league with all of those films. It is even more sexually daring than The Graduate (especially homosexually), as ... Read More:

Great love story and cinematography. Dimitri Gross was awesome in it! Was perhaps his last great film.

VHS : Dracula
I bought this 2-DVD set for a friend and ended up liking it so much I got one for myself. It is an excellent tribute to the Bela Lugosi classic. You can watch this film many different ways on this collection. The classic version, one with a different musical score (by Philip Glass performed by the Kronos Quartet), with two different commentaries, and with "monster tracks" which are pop-up text of informational tid-bits on the different players and scenes. Not only that but this collection also includes the Spanish version which was filmed at the same time ... Read More:

VHS : Fast Times at Ridgemont High
FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH is the best comical high school movie I've ever seen along with the fact that this DVD has some very interesting bonus features on it as well like showing scenes of "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" where they played a popular hit song in the 1980's like "She's Gonna Be Somebody's Baby Tonight" by Jackson Browne, "We Got The Beat" by The Go Go's, etc.

In addition to some of the interesting bonus features on this DVD, it showed the cast & crew of "Fast Times" like Sean Penn(Jeffrey Spiccolli), Judge Reinhold(Brad Hamilton), ... Read More:

VHS : Under the Volcano
Terrible movie, mostly because of the inadequate screenplay. But it might be impossible to film UNDER THE VOLCANO, just as it is impossible to film ULYSSES, because the story is told through the hero's interior monologue. The external events are mundane, boring. The drama is internal.
Also a terrible waste of Albert Finney, a perfect choice for the Consul. The artificiality of the situations (the movie was made on location in Mexico, but feels every bit as artificial as a movie made on a Hollywood soundstage) hamstrings him, and I don't feel he was properly directed ...
