VHS : Mediterraneo
This wonderful Italian film shot during the 1990's, tells the story of a group of misfit Italian soldiers from various parts of Italy sent to occupy a Greek Island during World War II of zero strategic importance.

Through a series of mishaps, they lose a soldier's beloved pet donkey, and their essential two-way radio, effectively cutting them off and leaving them forgotten during the war.

Left stranded on the seemingly deserted isle, they discover they are not alone once ... Read More:

VHS : Lisbon Story
I saw this movie first and only realized later that Wim Wenders also directed Wings of Desire, a film which I also enjoyed very much.

This is beautiful, quiet sort of a movie with a minimalist quality to it as it seems to have been filmed in Lisbon in the summer where it is so hot that nobody seems to be around. In that light, there is an oddly beautiful and romantic quality to vibes of lonliness presented in the film.

Without giving away too much, the film is about a man in Germany ... Read More:

VHS : Emmanuelle 2: The Joys of a Woman
An Adult, not rated, film

This is the second film in a "trilogy" (like Asimov's Foundation Trilogy was a Trilogy; i.e. more books and more films followed the trilogy) that stars Sylvia Kristel as Emmanuelle and spawned a large number of copy-cats (most of which go by the name Emanuelle). This particular film is based on Emmanuelle Arsan's book "L'antivierge." This film has been alternately titled "Emmanuelle 2," "Emmanuelle L'Antivierge," and the US trailer says that this film is titled "Emmanuelle: The ... Read More:

VHS : Evelyn (Dol)
This movie warmed my heart and I am wondering why it never made it into the theaters,at least in my part of the country. Pierce Brosnan did a fantastic job as Desmond Doyle. Sophie Vavasseur's portraial of Evelyn's simple and guileless faith was touching. The movie presented the very real feel of Europe in the 50s. I grew up in Germany. The little touches, like Desmond heating up milk, brought back memories (hot milk with dry congealed "skin" was a breakfast staple before pasteurization). The central point though was the battle of ... Read More:

186.Yojimbo starring: Toshirô Mifune, Eijirô Tono, Tatsuya Nakadai, Yôko Tsukasa, Isuzu Yamada

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Yojimbo
Yojimbo is Kurosawa's most popular movie both at home and in the West & it is easy to see why. First and foremost, it's just fun. Combining cool, dry wit, black humor and rousing action; even those who don't "get" the mocking of Westerns or Samurai movies will find plenty to enjoy. Shorter than Ran and Seven Samurai, more accessible than Rashomon or Throne of Blood and more exciting than Ikiru or Red Beard. Yojimbo isn't a masterpiece, though Toshiro Mifune gives an incredible performance. Yojimbo has such a relaxed, sardonic tone ... Read More:

VHS : Lady L
LADY L is a film about an octogenarian aristocrat (Sophia Loren) who reminisces about her steamy life as lover of an anarchist (Paul Newman) and wife of the sophisticated David Niven. The film has a lot of great scenery and a thoroughly competent cast but not much of a story.

Loren's husband Carlo Ponti is the producer. Peter Ustibov is the director and screenwriter. The film is based on a novel by Romain Gary. The supporting cast includes Cecil Parker, Claude Dauphin, Philippe Noiret and Michel Piccoli.

For me one of the most engaging moments in the film is when Gilbert, played by Broadbent, encounters Japanese Kendo fighting and especially Japanese theater. This is set up as a prelude to suggesting that an exhibition of Japanese culture Gilbert attends starts him off thinking up the Mikado. Whatever the intentions Broadbent's reactions as the camera focuses on his reactions to the unfolding drama in the play demonstrate in a completely convincing way how a Victorian Londoner would react to a (Noh?) play. He utterly and with an exquisite degree ... Read More:

This is, since I saw it last night, one of my favorite 10 films ever. It has such an emotional, passionate spiritual charge that seems to be about to erupt any time inside you. The story gets you from the start; you will grow to understand all the characters here. If you énd up hating the townfolk (the pharisees of the story) you will surely have missed the whole point, for this is a story of love and sacrifice, exactly what The Lord Jesus was all about. For, also, Ingrid Bergman grows to accept God's will by aknowledging that she can't fight "the world" by ... Read More:
