| I saw this movie first and only realized later that Wim Wenders also directed Wings of Desire, a film which I also enjoyed very much.
This is beautiful, quiet sort of a movie with a minimalist quality to it as it seems to have been filmed in Lisbon in the summer where it is so hot that nobody seems to be around. | This movie warmed my heart and I am wondering why it never made it into the theaters,at least in my part of the country. Pierce Brosnan did a fantastic job as Desmond Doyle. Sophie Vavasseur's portraial of Evelyn's simple and guileless faith was touching. The movie presented the very real feel of Europe in the 50s. I grew up in Germany. The little touches, like Desmond heating up milk, brought back memories (hot milk with dry congealed "skin" was a breakfast staple before pasteurization). | Yojimbo is Kurosawa's most popular movie both at home and in the West & it is easy to see why. First and foremost, it's just fun. | For me one of the most engaging moments in the film is when Gilbert, played by Broadbent, encounters Japanese Kendo fighting and especially Japanese theater. This is set up as a prelude to suggesting that an exhibition of Japanese culture Gilbert attends starts him off thinking up the Mikado. This is, since I saw it last night, one of my favorite 10 films ever. It has such an emotional, passionate spiritual charge that seems to be about to erupt any time inside you. The story gets you from the start; you will grow to understand all the characters here.
