Want to see what real talent is; then take a seat, get out the popcorn, take the phone of the hook, and enjoy one of the best acting films of all times. Wonder why Peter O'Toole, Katharine Hepburn are to be remembered as top of the chart artists- watch this film. Wonder why Anthony Hopkins is revered today in both stage and screen performances - watch this film. This film is one of very few that truly earned its keep.

VHS : Alice to Nowhere
Alice to Nowhere was a 'ripping yarn' novel from Evan Green. Sold to Crawfords, who produced it as a two part miniseries, so most of the detail of the book has been kept in the movie. This is not a sparse production. The movie is true to the book, except the main character has had a name change from Fred Crawford to Dave Mitchell - Hmmm. Strong performances, particularly by John Waters as Johnny.

The Birdsville track today is a track in name only, but should you plan to visit the 'Never Never' ... Read More:

VHS : The Thief of Bagdad
Back when we knew a bit less about the real Middle East, the "Easterns",Arabian-Nights-inspired fantasy movies, were a popular genre--and "The Thief of Bagdad" is the granddaddy of them all. The acting is very good and the special effects (no computers then) are a wonder.
The movie is splendid entertainment, but for those who insist on reality, the added discussion material deals with how Easterns fit in with ideas about colonialism that were current back then.

165.Les Miserables starring: Jean-Paul Belmondo, Michel Boujenah, Alessandra Martines, Salomé Lelouch, Annie Girardot

VHS : Boom!
I disagree with another review that said this was the worst movie ever made by Taylor-Burton. This wasn't that great, but having seen all the Taylor-Burton movies, I have to say that "The Comedians" and "Hammersmith is Out" are the very worst among them, followed closely by "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" (I never saw the appeal of that film). That being said, this movie is still hard to understand. Taylor plays a rich woman who goes to Sardinia every summer, and this particular summer, she's there dictating her autobiography. ... Read More:

167.The Woman Next Door starring: Gérard Depardieu, Fanny Ardant, Henri Garcin, Michèle Baumgartner, Roger Van Hool
directed by: François Truffaut
August 24, 1999
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : The Woman Next Door
"Woman" pairs Ardant with the ever-charismatic Depardieu in this tangled tale of love. Truffaut makes an oddly familiar premise fresh via his own intelligent, insightful script and top-notch turns from his well-paired stars, who really give off sparks here. Henri Garcin and Michele Baumgartner also lend restrained but effective support as the couple's victimized spouses. Intense and heart-rending, "The Woman Next Door" is definitely worth a visit.

168.Day of the Beast starring: Álex Angulo, Armando De Razza, Santiago Segura, Terele Pávez, Nathalie Seseña

169.The Best Intentions starring: Samuel Fröler, Pernilla August, Max von Sydow, Ghita Nørby, Björn Kjellman

VHS : The Best Intentions
I saw this (the three hour long version), some fifteen years ago. THE BEST INTENTIONS takes an intimate look at the Ingmar Bergman's parents' early years as a young married couple, against the wishes of his mother's (Pernilla August) parents. Her husband is a rather humorless and morose young man (Samuel Froler), and it was hard for me to see why they ended up together, at first. In fact, it was more than hard! Over time, it is revealed why the two came together in this union. Also, keep in mind that if it wasn't for their partnership, the great ... Read More:

VHS : Donizetti - L'Elisir d'Amore / Rescigno, Pavarotti, Blegen, Metropolitan Opera
this was a ligt hearted opera typical of Donizetti.
because the topic was something day to day a typical happening of ordinary
folks, it evoked a charming story about a typical lad enamored of a girl.(a very typical and regular situation)
The charm of the light opera was supplemented by the nice voices of both
Pavarotti, Blegen and other singers like the peddle who came into the
stage in a ballon which was so amusing!
