VHS : Alberto Express
The basic premise for this wonderful comedy is the strange customary tradition between father and son, Alberto, wherein the son has to pay the father a designated amount of money for his "debt" to him (the debt of a child to a parent). Nino Manfredi is wonderful as the father. Most of the movie takes place on a train, the Paris to Rome Express, which Alberto rides home to return to his pregnant wife. This is where the fun begins. All the characters on the train seem geared toward helping or ... Read More:

VHS : Le Bonheur
I saw "Le Bonheur" decades ago - an experience which was disturbing then but resonates in my memory to this day. The initial somewhat comic sustained portrait of a happy marriage is accompanied by sunny weather & Mozart in a major mode. Then comes the husband's affair, which seems more like something decided by the gods than the characters. Inevitably, a tragic event occurs. Life which goes on is accompanied by winter snow & Mozart in a minor key -the compromised happiness of maturity. ... Read More:

I'll make it short; there is no reason to fully restate the contents of this, as it's available from countless other authors and places.

*SPOILER WARNING*

I read the original comic (in Danish, though, and later in English), and in watching the Anime adaptation, I got severely disappointed. Yes, I know that you can never make a perfectly 'honest' translation of something from one form of media to another, but still, I had my hopes set for something more than this.

VHS : After the Rehearsal
"After the rehearsal" was the following project after Fanny and Alexander, and once more the master filmmaker employs his emotional memories, and his long experience as theater director to carve in relief a portentous dramatis personae behind stage.

An old but perfectionist director is besieged by two women. One of them, the unforgettable Ingrid Thulin, who desperately wishes he returns with her, through the multiple afflictions and hard conditions. She was a promising actress who feels is in frank deterioration, ... Read More:

VHS : Abandon Ship
From the opening scenes, director Richard Sale makes you aware that this is not going to be a "pretty" film. With the small shot of a simple sea mine floating in the water transforming into a classic 1950s explosion with horrific screams of passengers, Sale again reminds you that this is not going to be a typical Hollywood disaster film. As a reviewer, I must remind those reading that this is not a pretty picture - do not expect your typical film where the heroine always makes good decisions and those that are made do not impact ... VHS : Seventh Veil
One of the most delicious thrills for many British and American moviegoers in 1946 was the unexpected sight of James Mason thwacking down his cane on the fingers of Ann Todd as she played the piano. This one scene is probably better remembered than the movie itself. The Seventh Veil was one of the first British movies to deal with psychiatry; it made a lot of money in both countries; it helped propel Mason to Hollywood; and it undoubtedly is one of the great women's melodramas in movies. Surprisingly, after more than 60 years the movie still ... Read More:

137.The Changeling starring: George C. Scott, Trish Van Devere, Melvyn Douglas, Jean Marsh, John Colicos
directed by: Peter Medak
December 13, 1993
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : The Changeling
This is a truly scary movie, in the old fashioned sense. That is to say, it makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up without the gut-wrenching gore that seems to permeate the newer installments of the horror genre.

George C. Scott and then-wife Trish Van Devere both do credit to their roles and Vancouver does a great job in its role of Seattle as well.

Loved this movie and plan to watch it every Hallowe'en.

138.That Hamilton Woman starring: Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier, Alan Mowbray, Sara Allgood, Gladys Cooper
directed by: Alexander Korda
July 07, 1994
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : That Hamilton Woman
This is a typical London Films Korda classic of the time. While a beautiful and romantic film, much of the incidents portrayed in Emma's life are highly romanticized and inaccurate. Vivian Leign is her usually charged and bouncy self, and Olivier his usual stiff upper lip. The film becomes more a show of chemistry between these two famous actors of the time, with history loosely thrown in!

Vivian Leigh is all over this film, and while some find her bubbly manner charming, at times it can be annoying. I was half expecting her to go into her ... Read More:

I love this musical, I saw it for the first time when I was 8, now I'm 18 and I still love to watch it! It is exactly how I remember, but much clearer, I would recommend it to previous viewers and to families with young children.

VHS : The Boy Friend (1971)
One must never compare the Stage to the Film when it comes to musicals. Sometimes they are better than the original. Sometimes worse. ALWAYS different! That's just the nature of the transition. This is one of the great film musicals of all time. It's just not Sandy Wilson's "The Boy Friend". I love the stage play as well. This is a musical film about a production of the stage musical with all kinds of backstage intrigue as well as the terrific device of seeing a number "as is", as the director would have done if only he had money, and as the film maker in attendance would make a movie ...
