VHS : The Story of Jazz
This is a good DVD for people of any age who are interested in learning more about the roots of jazz music. The DVD features excellent recorded and video music clips, as well as interviews from some contemporary-to-the-great jazz musicians.

My only complaint is that the DVD, for the sake of time, glosses over some of the more intricate details of jazz history (which is understandable), and seems to ignore larger contributions from some of the lesser known jazz artists.

VHS : Once Upon a Time When We Were Colored
This movie was very well done. From the casting of the primary actor (a handsome young boy who is groomed at his wise old grandfather's knee) to his family-loyal aunt (the already accomplished actress Phylicia Rashad), this movie invites you into a world that any modern black American would be desperate to escape. The movie starts in the harsh, back-breaking times of old (post-slavery, sweat and dust-coated, and mentally as well as physically oppressive). As one of a million people who watched Alex Haley's Roots ... Read More:

VHS : Black Belt Jones
I saw this movie the one and only time when I was eight in the theatre and I remember the entire black audience roaring through the whole thing. I didn't know what was better, Black Belt Jones, Enter the Dragon, or Three the Hard Way. But I do know I loved them all. I'm now 39 and I've seen Three'' and Enter'' a couple of times over the years but I could not find Black Belt Jones anywhere to save my life. Well, turns out a friend of mine had a copy on DVD (yes there is one) and I just watched it. I LOVED IT ALL OVER AGAIN! Sure, it's ... Read More:

VHS : Michael Jordan's Playground
BOTTOM LINE:

CLASSIC! Yet again, MJ starts another trend that carried over to this day, blending basketball with hiphop. This video shows Jordan schooling a young guy (Tyren Turner - Caine of 'Menace to Society'!) about giving his all to become a great player. Thru this, we get to see never-before seen footage (at that time) of a monster MJ killing teams and scoring at will.

Nice music video montage at the end, again a first for sports vids.

VHS : Ella Fitzgerald - Something to Live For
"She could swing. She was a natural" She was the queen of swing. She liked lyrics because they could tell a story.

In her lifetime she won 13 Grammy awards, and sold over 40 million records. Her off-stage life was as interesting as her life as an artist singer. She loved her adopted son, and supported her extended family with what they needed. One secret about Ella was her deep concern for children, because of her difficult early years. She would give grants to children, without any publicity.

VHS : Black Sister's Revenge
I was lucky, or unlucky, enough to see this movie Fri. night 3/21/08 on the TCM channel. This is what you get when you can't sleep. By the way, it was followed by Penitentiary, but I digress. This movie hooked me like a roadside fatality car accident, I didn't want to look, but I couldn't look away. The acting was awful, but the story was interesting; it showed the lengths a sister would go to for her man, when she ain't got nothing to lose and she is from "Sippi" or Mississippi for the unhip. And, let those last five minutes be a lesson to those ... Read More:
