VHS : Against the Odds: Harlem Renaissance
Against The Odds captures the lives and works of African-American artists of the Harlem Renaissance, who through the Harmon Foundation, were able to crack the doors of America's artistic salons. Through interviews with the artists, news reels, photographs and pictures of their works we experience their uphill battle in trying to obtain recognition.

Prior to the formation of the Harmon Foundation there wasn't an outlet for Black artists to display and sell their works. The genesis ... Read More:

VHS : Lady Sings the Blues
I have always adored Billie Holiday since I was a kid. She is, to me, the greatest female jazz singer in history. I was about 11 when I first saw this movie and I was naturally excited when I learned that there was a movie about Billie holiday's life I was completely horrified and disappointed with this movie, Diana's acting, and the singing. I wanted to hear Billie's actual voice with the music, or at least someone who had a similar vocal quality to Billie. Nothing personal to Diana, I also like Diana's ... Read More:

VHS : The Piano Lesson (1995)
August Wilson's 'The Piano Player' with Charles Dutton and Alfre Woodard is such an engrossing play. This screen adaption brings you into there lives and makes you feel for every one in the movie. The writing 'superb'. The acting 'superb'. And the supporting cast is so top notch, you have to watch it more than once just to see all the scene stealers. This is a group that can send a complete message with just the raising of an eye, the shrugging of a shoulder, or the shaking of a head. You know what every gesture ... Read More:

VHS : Mama Flora's Family
Cicely Tyson is one of the greatest actresses in the world at least in my opinion. In this film, she carries elder Flora Henning Palmer with grace, dignity, class, strength and beauty despite the obstacles that her character has to face such as the cold-blooded murder of her husband as he was killed by white men for simply stealing cotton and they get away with it. The actress who plays young FLora does an excellent job in bringing the character to life. I believe it is Erika Alexander and she is fantastic as the mother, ... Read More:

Africans in America This is a wonderful series, which I like most for its tie-in with the series of music composed and compiled by Bernice Johnson Reagon and Toshi Reagon in connection with the production. I have the cds and play them all the time for the mixture of African American folkloric music mixed with the special contribution both Bernice J Reagon and her daughter Toshi Reagon are making to African American music and the light they continue to shed on the importance of African American music to American culture. Apparently, so ... Read More:

This movie is my favorite blaxploitation flick of all time...the big problem is that the xenon versions of the movie are cut. There's some sleazy video store in the neighborhood that has the un-cut vhs version. I have no idea why xenon buys the rights then cuts up the film.
