I first saw this movie back in the mid '60s when I was about 14 and thought it was a great movie. I recently purchased it on DVD and looked forward to enjoying it again. Unfortunately, like some wine this movie didn't age well. While there were some amusing spots (Donald Pleasance's performance)I found a great deal of the movie to be rather corny and ham handed. It was amusing to view again after forty years or so but for me it's not a keeper.

From virtually the opening scene, this celluloid comic book will take you right back to Saturday afternoons with the smell of popcorn, flying paper cups, noisy things rolling down the aisles and the kid behind with his feet at the back of your head. This is NOT a "mature" western. The quick-draw, eagle-eyed feats of shooting have to be seen to be believed (if you're 10 years old), the story line, dialogue, and multi-colored ranks of Mexican federales who serve as targets, all provide an aura around this movie ... I love this film. It's entertaining as it can be but historically it is way off the mark. The lyrics of one of song goes as follows: "...let the legend grow and grow....'bout those thirteen days of glory at the siege of Alamo..." I think this demonstrates Wayne's philosophy..."let the LEGEND grow and grow..." He had no problem with bending the facts a little to emphasize the glory that was Alamo.

I'm in total disagreement with this philosophy. I think that the actual story of Alamo is so compelling ... Read More:

I put this in my top 25 greatest westerns. Lots of good actors. Lots of shoot em up. Vengeance is the driving force of the story. Good sub plots. Will be or is a western classic. I bought the box set of Sam Peckinpah's western. Was worth the price for 4 movies and free delivery.

These oldies were really packed with action for those days so you can't really compare to Rambo,DieHard,Bourne Ultimatum et al, but they're still fun to watch.

As far as grandiose Westerns go, this is about my favorite - along with McCabe and Mrs. Miller. It's a story of two old retired gunfighters, long reformed in their ways, stepping back into the ring for one last hurrah of badness - assassination for hire. The movie builds tension wonderfully, creates a magical vibe of reality (minus the rather cheesy acting of the young guy who plays the "Scofield Kid"), is full of flesh-and-blood, fallible characters with whom you can empathize and whom you can hate - or be sickened by, or root for... ... In a recent interview on the "Director's" series on TV, Lawrence
Kasdan noted that Kevin Costner was already well into production on
this "series", when he asked Kasdan to come on as Director. Costner
was preparing a mini-series for HBO of "Earp", and, when that fell
through he needed help in reshaping it as a movie. Kasdan did what
he could, but it was too late to do very much in the way of cutting
the series down. Other: I love this film, and I love the fact that
Earp never took a bullet, lived to ... Read More:

This movie is cool. It's got what Spaghetti westerns are made of, but the horrible music track of that woman screaming throughout the movie took me off track every time. It sounded like a howling banshee. The quality of the widescreen DVD has been cleaned great, and all else is good.
