"October 1918" is the date for this story. German soldiers are planting explosives to destroy the advancing British soldiers when they occupy a French city. The townspeople hurriedly evacuate the town. The British are warned, they will not march into town. Instead Private Plumpick [some pun?] will be sent in to scout the town and defuse the bombs - by himself! [Believable?] Discovered by the Germans, he flees into a building for refuge and safety; it is the local insane asylum. The result of the ... Read More:

This film, nominated in 1999 as Best Foreign film, is a very sweet film about three young people coming of age in Lebanon during civil war. It does a great job at picking up some of the idiosyncrasies of the Lebanese people, as well as the French under whom they were once ruled. Its very entertaining, has great music, and does an extraordinary job of conveying the nuances of the society and its societal partitions. It illustrates religious conflicts while remaining a gentle and humane film. Even ... Read More:

Great W.W.2 movie. With William Holden a great actor. I sure do miss him. He puts these new actors to shame. Good movie for any war buff to add to his or hers collection.

After having read a few books and scene numerous documentaries on the subject. The World at War series did a great job on this. I had to purchase this movie even knowing the reviews here were mixed. I agree with many reviews on both sides. Overall I would say this to be a good movie though. It was well made and acted. My only complaint is they tend to portray the german soldiers as cry babies, deserters, remorseful, disobedient, and un-tough. I'd say that's very far from the real truth. The german soldier ... A great movie. One of the all time best. We all know that! Even all the Ebert wannabees that clog these pgs know that.

This 'Collector's Ed' has the intermission 20 mins into the second disc! I realize there are tech reasons for this. I think so anyway. It's still a pain. If only the intermission was at the end of the first disc. Perhaps in the near future they can put the whole movie onto one disc. Transfer is pretty good to my non-techie eyes.

VHS : The Last Metro
`Le Dernier Metro' is a gentle and almost placid film, one that sort of floats over the audience with its silky texture. This is both good and bad, for while it manages to absorb us in its emotional manipulation, it fails (at times) to give us any real tension; which is what we'd expect from a film of this nature. Even in the throws of marital aggression we are never really brought into the grit of it all, because everything moves with such smooth calculation. While this form of delivery may not work to establish the intimate tensions ... Read More:

VHS : The American Experience - Tom Hanks presents Return with Honor
"Return With Honor" is a documentary that everyone should see. Unlike a typical war documentary, this focuses on the inner strengths and emotions of the military men in question, in this case American pilots shot down, imprisoned, and tortured in North Vietnam. I have been privileged to have met many pilots who flew in Vietnam, and a handful of POW's, and can attest that without exception, these are a truly exceptional group of men: this documentary brings their story to life better than any other.

The film profiles multiple prisoners ... Read More:
