VHS : Alfred Hitchcock Collection: Sabotage, Man Who knew Too Much, 39 Steps, Lady Vanishes, Young And Innocent, Number 17, Rich And Strange, Murder, Secret Agent
As the next reviewer states, these are recorded in EP mode and the quality suffers, BUT WHAT A COLLECTION! I was especially pleased to see that the 10th tape was Sean O'Casey's Juno and the Paycock. Hitchcock's early films are such a joy: German Expressionism, slapstick comedy, long, long takes that show off the stage sense of the actors and Hitchcock himself, the beginnings of his particular film style, and his deep sense of social justice. If you can afford The Early Years DVD Collection you will ... Read More:

VHS : Lord Peter Wimsey: Clouds of Witness
Dorothy L. Sayers writes many non-fiction books however among her best is the Lord Peter Wimsey series. I came to this series sort of though the back door. My first taste was the BBC productions with Petherbridge as Lord Peter that can now be found on DVD ASIN: B000062XDX. So I read all of Dorothy's books containing the relationship of Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane. Now it is time to go through the whole series.
Now I watch the one I missed in PBS. The first thing I notices was that Ian Carmichael ... Read More:

VHS : Agatha Christie's Miss Marple Collection 2 (VHS Boxed Set)
On my TV set with my DVD player all of the discs looked and sounded fine.
I enjoy Helen Hayes for being Helen Hayes and Margaret Rutherford for being Margaret Rutherford but for Agatha Christies Miss Marple Jane Hickson wins hands down. I have tried only one of the latest British entry and she, too, appears quite able but Ms. Hickson has set the standard for authenticity (which, quite legitimately, was not the objective of Ms. Hayes or Ms. Rutherford).
To one who has never been to the UK, the settings seem quite fitting ... Read More:

These are the best of the series. It may be your introduction to the books or a chance to see the stories you've loved come alive.
These are the closest to the books (the characters and stories suffer some distortions) and perfectly cast and acted.

First of all,if you are a fan of John LeCarre`s work, then you enjoy that detailed, realistic and methodical "real world" espionage life that LeCarre sucks you into. This BBC mini-series is a wonderful adaptation of the novel and has much re-watch value.I recommend reading the book "A Perfect Spy" before viewing the mini-series...you will enjoy it that much more if you do!A great BBC television program that will also appeal to fans of British television and foreign film. In my opinion the mini-series comes in 3rd place behind the BBC classics: "Tinker,Tailor,Soldior,Spy" ... Read More:

If you are a fan of the film " The Name of the Rose", you will love Brother Cadfael

The monk is part Father Brown with Sherlock Holmes. He solves crimes the medievel way and the way he does it will intrigue mystery lovers everywhere.

Derek Jacobi bring an aire of class to Cadfael. He brings the character off the page of the Peter's novels with ease

VHS : Lord Peter Wimsey: The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club
I have the entire collection of the Carmichael Wimseys, and although I agree with the reviewer who said the actor doesn't meet my image of the character, I also have to say that he does grow on one with each succeeding play--and, because of it's vintage (970's), the series is in fact more like filmed theater, which makes it all the more enjoyable. By the time I got to Lord Peter Wimsey - Murder Must Advertise I enjoyed the Carmichael take on the character. I'm not sure quite who could play this role true to the author's version. The Edward Petherbridge Wimsey Dorothy L. Sayers Mysteries (The Lord Peter ... Read More:

VHS : Brother Cadfael Series 3 Box Set: The Rose Rent, A Morbid Taste for Bones, and The Raven in the Foregate
These three mysteries, based in England during the Middle Ages, are really quite well done. Of the three I think A Morbid Taste For Bones was probably the best.

The Cadfael mysteries are not just good mysteries; they also provide an interesting look at life in the Middle Ages and how things were done, the role of the Church, Royal officers, etc.

Joan Hickson will always be thee "Miss Marple" to me. The recent Miss Marple starring Geraldine McEwan pale in comparison for many reasons.
