VHS : The Pirates of Penzance
There was much controversy over the release and re-broadcast of this version, with Ronstadt playing Mabel. While the rest of the title cast (Kline, Rose, Smith, etc.) were marvelous, Ronstadt was selected to play Mabel for her "star" status at the time - and the raw outlook, that she was a country-western singer, NOT an opera or classical voice. Apparently she had worked for many weeks prior to shooting Pirates in order to enhance and "ready" the soprano she needed to portray Mabel. Not an easy feat, ... Read More:

what can i say that hasn't been said about this classic. it's a great family movie. great way the family comes together to defend itself. great way the boys are entrusted to go out and work for themselves to find a solution. lots of fun and excitement. is a little violent/graphic for a family movie, but no surprises over anything else.

VHS : Caine Mutiny
I've always enjoyed this movie, except for one thing. The actor who plays Willie Keith- Robert Francis- is awful. I think a wooden indian could have delivered a better performance. One of the plot elements of the movie is that Ensign Keith is well connected, Francis must have been as well, because he never deserved being awarded this pivotal role.

Everyone else does a creditable job,and Jose Ferrer and Humphrey Bogart are outstanding.

The movie ends just at the right point- not like ... Read More:

VHS : Buccaneer
About 1959, I would have been 8 years old, my great aunt Louise saw "The Buccaneer" and had a stroke. She had a stroke each time she saw it. She saw it 5 more times and died.

The term "Kentucky Long Rifle" did not exist prior to the battle of NO; {NO}; it was the "Pennsylvania Rifle" from 1739 to 1815.

LaFitte's part is overstated. The exact Brit battle plan was delivered to Jackson by two of George washington's former spies, Owen Thomas and William Thomas, sr.

On the frontier, ... Read More:

VHS : Ferry to Hong Kong
Orson Welles plays a role in this movie that is different from any I've seen him in before. As the proper English Captain Hart who ferries the boat to Hong Kong, he is continually pestered by an obnoxious drunk who lives on the boat, because without his papers, he is not allowed to land anywhere. The drunk, Conrad, constantly creates havoc among the passengers, and Hart continually tries to get rid of him, but when storm and pirates threaten the safety of the boat and the passengers, the two join forces, and the drunk manages to gain some ... VHS : The Big Blue (Le Grand Bleu)
Big Blue is a joy to watch. The scenery, on land or in the sea is beautiful. The acting is very good. The movie is humorous and mellow. There is a spiritual theme that unfolds towards the end of the movie, but I will not be specific lest I spoil it for others to uncover.

VHS : Sinbad - Legend of the Seven Seas
The legend of Fa Mulan was one of my favorite stories as a Chinese-American growing up in San Francisco some decades ago. I now live abroad and generally make it back to the Bay Area every summer. The year that "Mulan" was released, I didn't get to San Francisco until after its initial theatrical run. I did find it at a smaller neighborhood theater and my father immediately agreed to see it with me. To my great surprise, what we saw was a special version dubbed in Cantonese. My Chinese wasn't good enough to catch most of it, but I could understand ... Read More:

I watched this movie for the first time 20 years ago with Anthony Quinn - not Spencer Tracy. It was slightly different - but still a great watch.

VHS : Abandon Ship
From the opening scenes, director Richard Sale makes you aware that this is not going to be a "pretty" film. With the small shot of a simple sea mine floating in the water transforming into a classic 1950s explosion with horrific screams of passengers, Sale again reminds you that this is not going to be a typical Hollywood disaster film. As a reviewer, I must remind those reading that this is not a pretty picture - do not expect your typical film where the heroine always makes good decisions and those that are made do not impact the lives of others. "Seven Waves ... Read More:
