VHS : The McCourts of Limerick
"The McCourts of Limerick" has almost been an annual visitor to PBS television affiliate WNET viewers for years now, airing around the time of Saint Patrick's Day. It was quickly produced soon after the publication of Frank McCourt's "Angela's Ashes", and regrettably, has more of the production values of a typical home family video than the succeeding "The McCourts of New York". And yet, what a "home family video" this is from documentary filmmaker Conor McCourt, who excels in recounting the harsh, ... Read More:

VHS : Genghis Blues
I loved this story and music! What a wonderful tribute to friendship, exploration, endurance of culture and talent.
It is hard to believe that the music I heard was coming from a human and not a mix of instruments. The human voice is amazing. Paul has overcome adversity to become an accomplished muscian, a blues singer, and a highly respected throat singer in the Tuvan tradition! He was very brave to travel so far into the far reaches of Asia when he could not see and had to depend on strangers ... Read More:

VHS : Jupiter's Wife
This documentary introduces us to Maggie a lady of middle years living in Manhattan's Central Park with a pack of stray dogs she has made in to a family of sorts. The filmmaker, Michel Negroponte, met Maggie by chance in the park and was entranced by her beguiling personality and cryptic statements that seem to show both madness and wisdom. Maggie is a mysterious character and Negroponte is able to solve some of the mystery of her earlier life through a bit of research that surprisingly uncovers tapes of different appearances ... VHS : America & Lewis Hine
I originally saw this on PBS, and then was lucky enough to get both the book and the VHS tape later on from Amazon. I also purchased a very good book on Lewis Hine from the Lourve when I was in Paris in 2000, which I also treasure. His photographs really speak to my deepest view of America.

Many of us know that America's past is dotted with not so grand moments. The industrial revolution at the turn of the century, with the exploitation of children and immigrants, is what Hine documents for us, and what is highlighted in this biographical ... Read More:

VHS : Weather Underground
This is a great documentary that starts with the SDS and how some of there members formed the weather underground movement. It is not a one sided story glorifying the movement which you can get with many films that deal with subjects like this. It actually made me sad because a lot of these people had good intentions but just did not get it together. This definitely broadened my understanding of the weathermen

VHS : Children Underground
Ana, Mihai, Cristina, Macarena and others are a loosely aligned group of street kids who sleep on cardboard mats in the subway station. Some ran away from abusive parents while others grew up in orphanages. But they have come together in a sort of urban "Lord Of The Flies" scenario, where violence, paint sniffing and begging for handouts makes up the daily routine.

A few Romanian social workers and sympathetic foreigners try to help the kids get an education and find housing. But their well intentioned efforts are overwhelmed by a poor society scant on ... Read More:

VHS : Biography - Mary of Nazareth: A Mother's Life
This is a wonderful show for even the most devout Christian. It chronicles the life of Mary and talks about some of the less certain aspects of her life. Anyone of dedicated religious committment will not feel threatened by this video, but instead the enlightened person will open mindedly embrace this inquisitive, sensitive documentary about one of the world's most influential women. Those fundamentalist or radicle persons who might object to any type of historical account and inquiry of anything biblical might not be of the character to understand such a discussion, ...
