VHS : Man Facing Southeast
This movie is to K-Pax as the remake of Solaris is to the original. This movie has haunted me for years, ever since I first watched it. I am not wild about some of the scenes toward the end, but the scene with the brain at the sink is one of the best of all time. Is Rantes mad? Or is he telling the truth about himself? This movie really deserves to come out on DVD.

VHS : Lisbon Story
I saw this movie first and only realized later that Wim Wenders also directed Wings of Desire, a film which I also enjoyed very much.

This is beautiful, quiet sort of a movie with a minimalist quality to it as it seems to have been filmed in Lisbon in the summer where it is so hot that nobody seems to be around. In that light, there is an oddly beautiful and romantic quality to vibes of lonliness presented in the film.

Without giving away too much, the film is about a man in ... Read More:

VHS : I Don't Want to Talk About It (VHS)
This is a delightful film by Argentine director Maria Luisa Bemberg (who directed her first film at age 56! - an inspiration to us all). The movie takes place in a small Argentine town by the name of San Jose de los Altares, some time in the 1930s. Like most small towns, it is a place filled with hypocrisy and gossip. When the movie opens, the camera catches the town priest without his pants (literally) in bed with his mistress, and we soon discover that the brothel is the place to go if you're looking for ... VHS : Pepe
George Sidney, one of Hollywood's most underrated directors, never made an awful film, but this one comes close, mostly due to its insufferably cloying use of Cantinflas--one of Mexico's smartest, wittiest movie stars ever--but here you'd think he was a moron, a smiling bobblehead of Mexican fold wisdom and simplicity.

Indeed Cantinflas, as "Pepe," whom you might call the original "horse whisperer," is incredibly good in the movie, which makes it a drag to have to give it a big two thumbs down for political ... Read More:

This movie is absolutely amazing! I remember seeing it many years ago, when I was a little girl, and I remember my parents watching it on TV, and there were certain scenes that I never forgot. I finally managed to find the movie and I couldn't wait to buy it. It's an interesting forbidden love story, and it's interesting to see the barriers, the social classes, and how religious fanatics, and the laws can dictate people's lives. Watch it.

6.Cabeza De Vaca starring: Juan Diego, Daniel Giménez Cacho, Roberto Sosa, Carlos Castañón, Gerardo Villarreal

I have to agree with the positive reviews on this movie. I saw it several years ago, I think on PBS. It was so long ago I can't be sure but what I am sure is this movie continues to haunt me to this day. With the problems about the rendering to DVD, I hesitate to spend $86 and wait only for a better price or a better rendering. The producers and directors of this movie had enormous vision and created a world so alien to us that it pays respect to those characters in history, both Spanish and Native. It should not be missed ... Read More:

VHS : Xica
This is one of those great movies that is extremely under-rated. Xica is an African slave in Brazil who overcomes her bonds of slavery and masters her master using her feminine wiles. This is definitely a must-see movie!

VHS : Strawberry & Chocolate - - Subtitled in English
I won't bother with plot points and such since lots of other reviewers have already done so, but I will say that this film is definitely worthy of the accolades and positive reviews it has received. I was particularly struck by the performance of Jorge Perugorría as the gay artist Diego. Perugorria's performance draws you in whether he is being sly and bitchy or indignant and passionate. His unrequited love for David (Vladimir Cruz) is both sweetly naïve as well as crushingly sad. I won't give away the final scene, but I will say that without Perugorria's ... Read More:

Ten-year-old Pixote (Portuguese slang word for, "PeeWee")is one of the millions of homeless children in Brazil. He is arrested in a typical police round-up and placed in their vesion of the United States Junenvile detention centers. although them film is about the kids down in Brazil, some 20 years ago.... You would be surprised to know,... that the US system is not much better, today, than what is portrayed in this movie! The kids in the US judical and foster care systems are treated pretty much the same way as these kids are treated 20 years ago in a third world ... Read More:

VHS : Death of a Bureaucrat
If you've ever been bounced around a bureaucracy like some kind of human pinball, you'll be able to relate to this movie. And since most people have, this movie probably would have a wide audience that it appealed to. See, this film is about bureaucracy - be it communist, capitalist, or otherwise. But make no mistake- it's not a film about communist bureaucracy. It just so happens that it is set in communist Cuba.

The movie is funny in an absurd sort of way, kind of like Luis Buenel's movies. If you like those kinds of movies, this one may be for you.
