At first I didn't know quiet what to make of this movie. Jeremy Irons sure does have the talent to play "STRANGE" beyond words. I don't own the VHS, I have a movie on a CD, but still this is quiet an interesting movie. To love someone for 18 years and NOT know they are man, only proves, "Love is blind". After I watched this a couple of times, I grew to appreciate the talent that REALLY went into this movie. ONLY Jeremy Irons and John Lone could have pulled this off. If you are affended by same sex love, ... Read More:

The stories are timeless and still relevant, even though one takes place in 1954, one in 1974, and the last in 2000. It is a similar format to "If These Walls Could Talk 2" in which there are three stories from three different generations. The 1954 sequence hits home, in spite of a "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy within the armed services, because even now, a military career can still be irreparably damaged if a soldier or officer is outed. Gay youths can relate to the 1974 story, seeing minimal progress from 1974 to the present ... Read More:

I saw the movie when it came out in the mid 90's and after visiting Savannah this past summer & touring the Mercer house and then reading the book for the fist time, I just had to see it again. I remembered it as being better than I now rate it, but I also read the book before seeing it the second time & I found several things lacking or rushed when comparing it to the book. It is still a must see if you liked the book, but remember that a movie always cuts & changes some things that you just can't figure out why, like ... Read More:

I have never seen a film which so well captures the terror that is in the heart of a child who lives in fear of an adult caretaker. The director has worked a miracle here. She has enabled us to see the world through the eyes of an abused child, and it is not easy to watch, but it is essential viewing for all who want to understand child abuse.

The scene in which Jason Flemyng's character convinces his girlfriend to let him back into the house, where he will continue to abuse her son, is one of the most devastating scenes ... Read More:

7.Wilde starring: Stephen Fry, Jude Law, Vanessa Redgrave, Jennifer Ehle, Gemma Jones
directed by: Brian Gilbert

VHS : Wilde
Brian Gilbert's "Wilde" stands as a realiable version of the Irish writer's later years. Wilde's relationship with Alfred Douglas, Robert Ross, his wife Constance and many other characters is consistent, and agrees with reports left by contemporaries who knew well Oscar Wilde and his circle. Good performances by Stephen Fry, Jude Law, Michael Sheen and Tom Wilkinson. The latter, as the marquis of Queensberry, is outstanding - although portraying such a clichéed character is obviously a much easier task than, say, the ambiguity of Wilde himself ... Read More:

Luchino Visconti`s Death In Venice (1971)

Alvy Singer: "You're not going to come back to New York?"
Annie Hall: "What's so great about New York? It's a dying city, you read Death in Venice."
(Woody Allen's ANNIE HALL, 1979)

Luchino Visconti's movie is not only a fine adaptation of Thomas Mann's celebrated novel, but it's one of those few films that succeeded in adding another dimension to the literature they stemmed from. Amongst those works I can cite Kubrick's 2001: Space Odyssey, Tarkovski's Solaris (though ... Read More:

VHS : Wild Reeds
André Téchiné's name is synonymous with great French films. He is best known for My Favorite Season (1993) and Wild Reeds (1994), both of which are included in the recent release of the Andre Techine Boxset. Set in a boarding school in the Southwest of France in 1962, Wild Reeds (Les Roseaux sauvages) tells the story of a ménage à trois between four French youths during the political turmoil of the Algerian War. François (Gaël Morel) and Maïté (Élodie Bouchez) are close friends who share a love for French cinema. Maïté is interested in becoming François' ... Read More:

VHS : Strawberry & Chocolate - - Subtitled in English
I won't bother with plot points and such since lots of other reviewers have already done so, but I will say that this film is definitely worthy of the accolades and positive reviews it has received. I was particularly struck by the performance of Jorge Perugorría as the gay artist Diego. Perugorria's performance draws you in whether he is being sly and bitchy or indignant and passionate. His unrequited love for David (Vladimir Cruz) is both sweetly naïve as well as crushingly sad. I won't give away the final scene, but I will say that without Perugorria's stellar performance throughout ... Read More:
