VHS : Wild Reeds
André Téchiné's name is synonymous with great French films. He is best known for My Favorite Season (1993) and Wild Reeds (1994), both of which are included in the recent release of the Andre Techine Boxset. Set in a boarding school in the Southwest of France in 1962, Wild Reeds (Les Roseaux sauvages) tells the story of a ménage à trois between four French youths during the political turmoil of the Algerian War. François (Gaël Morel) and Maïté (Élodie Bouchez) are close friends who share ... Read More:

VHS : Maybe... Maybe Not
There is only one reason to watch this film: sexy Til Schweiger. He has beauty and magnetism, besides being an extraordinary young actor with subtlety, power, and depth. Unfortunately, these qualities are all but lost in this heavy-handed comedy. It is beautifully shot but, considering its comedic intent, rather darkly. The story and its underlying principles leave much to be desired.

Handsome Axel (Schweiger) works in a 30's-style supper club, presumably to remind us of the wacky social ... Read More:

3.Thieves - (aka "Les Voleurs") starring: Catherine Deneuve, Daniel Auteuil, Laurence Côte, Benoît Magimel, Fabienne Babe

VHS : Thieves - (aka "Les Voleurs")
Deneuve is in a subdued role in this film. She's also in a supporting role so the film cover is a bit misleading. The story is not as strong as others that she's chosen.

Daniel Auteuil is great as the cop who is entangled in the life of a trouble-making young woman. Extremely sexy in this role, he plays the role of a strong yet conflicted law enforcer well.

The film is a bit weak in its flow. It's not the worst film but it's also not extremely good either.

4.Maedchen In Uniform starring: Dorothea Wieck, Hertha Thiele, Emilia Unda, Erika Biebrach, Gertrud de Lalsky

VHS : Maedchen In Uniform
I initially found this film while watching Henry & June. It's one of the films they watch at the movie theater. If you are a fan of early film or a history buff into pre-Nazi Germany movies... or a collector of homosexual or feminist films... then this is definitely worth purchasing. An interesting fact is that this film is pieced together in parts because the original was destroyed by the Nazis. It was reformatted from various copies, so you will see some sections with different types of subtitles.. and different ... Read More:

5.Noir & Blanc starring: Catherine Belkhodja, Marc Berman, Arnaud Carbonnier, Isaach De Bankolé, Francis Frappat
directed by: Claire Devers
July 12, 1995
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Noir & Blanc
Moody and atmospheric, this directoral debut by Claire Devers tranplants a Tennessee Williams story to 1980s France. Something may have gotten lost in the translation. The story of a repressed accountant who finds pleasure in the pain provided him by a sullen African masseur is disturbing, but ultimately too sketchy. If you're going to plumb the darkest depths, there's at least a strong argument for going into some detail. No, not more torture scenes, but some hint of the actual relationship of the two protagonists might help.

6.Being at Home With Claude starring: Roy Dupuis, Jacques Godin, Jean-François Pichette, Gaston Lepage, Hugo Dubé
directed by: Jean Beaudin

VHS : Being at Home With Claude
I viewed this movie a long time ago, because I, too, was a La Femme Nikita fan, and because an admirer of Mr. Dupuis' work after this particular movie. I would like to add that this movie was also admitted to Cannes of that year, and it was Mr. Dupuis' first major role. He killed in this movie, literally and figuratively. He was both emotional and sensual in his portrayal of a streetwise prostitute who murdered his lover for no apparent reason it seemed, except in his own mind, with flashbacks into his past, his partyings, his first ... 7.Fire starring: Shabana Azmi, Nandita Das, Karishma Jhalani, Ramanjeet Kaur, Dilip Mehta

VHS : Fire
Deepa Mehta is best known for her extraordinary trilogy: Fire (1996), Earth (1998), and Water (2005). Set in contemporary Delhi, India, the first film in the series, Fire, ignited a controversy upon its 1988 release with its frank depiction of loveless, arranged marriages and lesbian sexuality. Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das star as unhappily married sisters-in-law, Radha and Sita, living together under the same roof with their husbands. In fact, the entire extended family lives above a sundries and video store run by Radha's husband. Radha is ... Read More:

8.French Twist starring: Victoria Abril, Catherine Alias, Sylvie Audcoeur, Véronique Barrault, Michèle Bernier

VHS : French Twist
A feelgood movie that only the French could make. Or maybe the Italians. I saw it on TV and hugged myself with so much glee I bought the DVD. The clothes are stylish, the setting sunny and the outcome just right. Alain Chabat is marvellous as the spoiled but charming cuckold, and the two women are perfectly cast for sparks to fly. A romantic comedy for the 21st century.

9.Ludwig starring: Helmut Berger, Romy Schneider, Trevor Howard, Silvana Mangano, Gert Fröbe

VHS : Ludwig
I have read a considerable amount of material on the life of the tragic Ludwig II of Bavaria. Enough to be totally captivated by the man and his dedication to a life of art and music. For sure, he had many flaws like other leaders, but he was a man made for a future era and was born before his time. This Visconti film had tremendous potential to bring out the truth about this famous eccentric who was in love with the night and was only interested in building castles to fill a romantic vision of Germanic mythology. Unfortunately it fails to communicate properly ... Read More:
