VHS : Magnificent Seven
This movie was made in the days before film-makers realized that people were sophisticated enough to recognize corn when they saw it. Horz Bucholz's impetuous kid act was just total corn. Talk about bad acting. Robert Vaughn deliberately affects some kind of bizarre weakling voice quality.

The whole premise of the movie was that the villagers were wothless cowards but Bronson goes off his head proclaiming how brave they are because they're dirt scratching farmers. The 40 banditos ... Read More:

Director Shiro Toyoda has wrought a deeply affecting film which is not only a beautiful cinematic work, but also an exceptional study of female psychology.

VHS : Akira
I'll make it short; there is no reason to fully restate the contents of this, as it's available from countless other authors and places.

*SPOILER WARNING*

I read the original comic (in Danish, though, and later in English), and in watching the Anime adaptation, I got severely disappointed. Yes, I know that you can never make a perfectly 'honest' translation of something from one form of media to another, but still, I had my hopes set for something more than this.

One part of it is ... Read More:

VHS : Sanshiro Sugata (AKA Judo Saga)
Martial arts films have come a long way since this curious historical drama, the first feature film directed by the up-and-coming Akira Kurosawa. Filmed and edited during wartime, it dramatizes the story of the late 19th Century development of judo as a breakaway form of the jiu-jitsu school of martial arts. Without the benefit of Hong Kong style wire-works or the flashy acrobatics of Bruce Lee, et al, the combat looks mostly like wrestling or sumo... Which, perhaps, back in the 1880s, it was. Takashi Shimura introduces his ... Read More:

7.Yojimbo starring: Toshirô Mifune, Eijirô Tono, Tatsuya Nakadai, Yôko Tsukasa, Isuzu Yamada

VHS : Yojimbo
Yojimbo is Kurosawa's most popular movie both at home and in the West & it is easy to see why. First and foremost, it's just fun. Combining cool, dry wit, black humor and rousing action; even those who don't "get" the mocking of Westerns or Samurai movies will find plenty to enjoy. Shorter than Ran and Seven Samurai, more accessible than Rashomon or Throne of Blood and more exciting than Ikiru or Red Beard. Yojimbo isn't a masterpiece, though Toshiro Mifune gives an incredible performance. Yojimbo has such a relaxed, sardonic tone ... Read More:

VHS : Red Sorghum
I have been a fan of Zhang Yimou's films since 1999 when I first watched his 1991 film Raise The Red Lantern for my East Asian Novel class, and since then I have watched several other of his films such as Not One Less, To Live, The Road Home, Happy Times, and Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles. Each one of his films brings something new to the table and delves into such issues as urban/rural conflicts, political corruption, and Japan-China relations. Red Sorghum is Zhang Yimou's first film as a director and while it may be a bit simpler than many ... Read More:

VHS : To Live
There is a subtle emphasis on food in the two movies of Yimou Zhang that I have seen, but no plain indication of the Great Chinese Famine of 1958-1961, brought on by the so-called Great Leap Forward to an extent that has been debated. But the historical fact of it is not debated, whatever the whole truth about its causes and whatever the toll, whether 15 million or 36 million. Perhaps Chinese audiences do not need to be reminded of it, but some occidental audiences might need to understand this much about the meaning of a plate of food in such movies. ... Read More:
