I find it frustrating with the economy being so bad to pay $74.00 to $100.00 dollars for a dvd especially a popular classic like this. This movie is amazing and one of my favorites. I higly recommend this movie. as for columbia dvd going out of print fast is nerve wrecking because u get greedy creeps who yank up the price like gas.anyhow hopefully columbia will re-issue this,it is a popular and cherished classic....

VHS : Lady Sings the Blues
I have always adored Billie Holiday since I was a kid. She is, to me, the greatest female jazz singer in history. I was about 11 when I first saw this movie and I was naturally excited when I learned that there was a movie about Billie holiday's life I was completely horrified and disappointed with this movie, Diana's acting, and the singing. I wanted to hear Billie's actual voice with the music, or at least someone who had a similar vocal quality to Billie. Nothing personal to Diana, I also like Diana's ... Read More:

"What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?" So begins what is perhaps Langston Hughes' most famous poem "A Dream Deferred" and ends with the line, "Or does it explode?" The writer Lorraine Hansberry lifted the quotation from Hughes' powerful poem for her equally powerful award-winning play that ultimately became the 1961 film starring Sidney Poitier, Claudia McNeil, Ruby Dee and Diana Sands, directed by Daniel Petrie for which Ms. Hansberry wrote the screenplay.

It is ... Read More:

VHS : Eve's Bayou
I walked into `Eve's Bayou' with high expectations. One of my film snob friends (I can call him that, he's cool with it) said that this was one of the greatest ensemble pieces of all time, and while I wasn't really sure what all the movie was about and had really heard nothing about it, I took his word for it anyways and decided to give it a watch through.

Sadly, I think he was wrong; dead wrong.

I will say this for the movie; I actually thought that its premise was smart, to an extent. ... Read More:

VHS : Cabin in the Sky
Readers of this space know that I consider Billie Holiday above all, doped up or straight, the undisputed "Queen" of female jazz singers. From a Cole Porter tune like "Let's Do It" to a soulful "Strange Fruit" her timing and sense of the song was uncanny. However, even a great singer like Billie had earlier singers that influenced her and that is where we pick up the career of the jazz singer under review here, Ethel Waters. Her name may not be known today, except to early jazz aficionados or those who recall her award ... Read More:

I picked this up because I've always admired Pam Grier. For many years, even now one of the sexiest, most stunning women in films. This has always been my fav of her early films. Now that I own it I like it even better. The image and sound quality of the DVD are top-notch. Not blurred and scratchy like many films from the old American International library. The twenty five year old Pam takes your breath away in every scene. A big surprise for me was the commentary from director Jack Hill who like many film makers of the 70s ... Read More:

This was a very good classic movie about racism. I am too young to recognize any of the actors and I wonder if any of the Black actors really experienced racism while filming this movie. Example, did they have to go through the back doors of restaurants and hotels. Also, maybe did they have to drink out of the "white only" water fountains while filming. This movie had to be surreal to the Black actors in this movie because I am quite sure they experienced racism in their everyday real lives.

Great Flick! Classic in my opinion which is why I purchased it. I enjoy looking at my classics at least once a year. Unfortuantely, this movie does not appear on TV much.
