VHS : Girl Groups: The Story of a Sound
I am the credited director and co-producer of this documentary. I was surprised to see that Amazon actually has the video, I thought it was long gone. No DVD's, too bad. I drifted onto Amazon because a good buddy of mine loved this era and I wanted to get a copy for him. Glad to see that Girl Groups, The Story of a Sound still lives, such as it is.

This film took almost a year of my life, a very stressful year at that since it is always difficult to juggle the creative storytelling aspect ... Read More:

VHS : Jazz - A Film by Ken Burns
The greatest compliment to this series is that it has created a torrent of discussion and the debates are still raging. I enjoy this series so much, I watch it nearly every year.

My critique has been discussed at length, so I summarize this way:

I appreciate Wynton Marsalis' discussion of the jazz with which he is familiar. This does not qualify Wynton Marsalis to decide, for everyone else, what constitutes jazz when the question of "fusion" comes up.

Much of fusion, both ... Read More:

4.Wild Man Blues starring: Woody Allen, Letty Aronson, Soon-Yi Previn, Dan Barrett, Simon Wettenhall
directed by: Barbara Kopple

VHS : Wild Man Blues
While this is, technically, an adequate-to-good documentary (Barbara Kopple always does technically proficient work) -- as for its *truthfulness* about the characters involved, specifically, Woody and his now-wife Soon Yi, it's an excellent example of Woody Allen's ongoing manipulation of the media.

Consider this: It's the late 1990s, Woody Allen is in a world of trouble over his affair with a young, underage girl, Soon-Yi, who at one time was the adopted child of Woody's common law wife, Mia Farrow. He was also ... Read More:

I learned nothing from the DVD or the Book that I already knew. He does too much talking and doesn't cover hardly anything. I don't even think it would benefit beginners.

VHS : Better Living Through Circuitry
I bought the DVD just to hear Genesis talk. They did a great job making this movie. The rave culture was just history repeating itself like in the psychedelic 60s. There is a lot of bonus material as well. Acidplanet.com featured samples and loops for a contest to remix or create a song about the movie. I had a great time throwing some beats and loops around.

8.Adventures in the Kingdom of Swing starring: Benny Goodman

VHS : Adventures in the Kingdom of Swing
The only criticism I have of this is that it could have been three hours long with all the available material and surviving members of his bands... well, it's still a 5 star video for the fan of jazz. Benny Goodman is a legend and the DVD is a short but fitting tribute.

9.The Beatles - The First U.S. Visit starring: Brian Epstein, George Harrison, Murray the 'K', John Lennon, Paul McCartney
directed by: Albert Maysles, Kathy Dougherty, Susan Frömke

VHS : The Beatles - The First U.S. Visit
Unlike their first movie all of what you see is true. For subsequent generations, a glimpse into what made the Beatles the phenomenon that lives right down to this day -- nearly four decades after they disbanded. Interesting to compare how they are at the moment they about to "conquer" America as opposed to how they appear (a group about to break apart) in LET IT BE. The music is subject to the live sound systems of 1964 but still a valuable addition to any collection!

10.Madonna - Truth or Dare starring: Madonna, Donna DeLory, Niki Harris, Luis Camacho, Oliver Crumes Jr.

VHS : Madonna - Truth or Dare
Madonna - Truth or Dare is a documentary from 1991. Most people either love or loathe The Material Girl. I love her to pieces because she is never afraid to show the good and bad side of her personality. This documentary follows Madge during her Blonde Ambition Tour, the concert scenes are filmed in color and the black and white scenes are my intimate with Madonna and her road family discussing fame and relationships. I love when she makes fun of Kevin Coster and Warren Beatty leaves nothing off the table, he tells his then-girlfriend she doesn't want to live ... Read More:
