VHS : Our Friend Martin
I originally purchased this for a friend who is also a teacher, however after seeing it, I decided I wanted one for my classroom as well! It is a great mix of animation and actual footage. My friend teaches in the primary grades and we both felt additional instruction and explanation might be necessary for that audience. I teach upper elementary and the DVD will support a basal reader selection quite nicely and without additional instruction. Highly recommend.

VHS : Jazz - A Film by Ken Burns
The greatest compliment to this series is that it has created a torrent of discussion and the debates are still raging. I enjoy this series so much, I watch it nearly every year.

My critique has been discussed at length, so I summarize this way:

I appreciate Wynton Marsalis' discussion of the jazz with which he is familiar. This does not qualify Wynton Marsalis to decide, for everyone else, what constitutes jazz when the question of "fusion" comes up.

VHS : The Civil War - A Film by Ken Burns (Boxed Set)
Ken Burns' epic documentary about the Civil War is perhaps the greatest and most all-encompassing history lesson of the North/South conflict that has ever been put on film or page. Not only is every important detail of the war covered (and in such a way that the details are interesting and important, not boring), but two entire episodes are devoted to the build-up and aftermath of the conflict. Essentially, if you were teaching a class on the Civil War, this video is all you would need, as it both conveys ... Read More:

VHS : Leonard Hearns Saga, The
This tape features both fights between Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns, two of the greatest welterweights of all time. The fights are complete and, the first fight is arguably one of the 10 greatest fights in boxing history. Unfortunately, I was somewhat disappointed with this tape. I was hoping to hear a lot of post fight and pre fight commentary from experts. I also was expecting to hear comments from the fighters themselves. This tape has none of that. Even the standard post fight interviews with the fighters ... Read More:

VHS : Underground Railroad (History Channel)
One of the most general perceptions that I received from my high school history days in the 1960's concerning the fate of black slaves in America was that they essentially passively waited for the Union armies to free them during the process of the Civil War in the 1860's. In short, blacks had no pre-history as a people who struggled for freedom in their own right but were merely the victims of history. Of course, since those days I have made it my business to find out the real story of slave resistance and although there are ... Read More:

VHS : Frederick Douglass: When The Lion Wrote History
A compelling 90-minute PBS biography tracing Douglass' struggles, ideas, and influences. This sophisicated chronicle examines debates within the abolitionist movement, Douglass' complicated relationship to Lincoln and the Republican party, and Douglass' personal life. A fascinating look at the radical politics of 19th century when blacks were slaves, women couldn't own property or vote, and angry mobs attacked abolitionist speakers for arguing that "all men are created equal."

VHS : Biography - James Brown: The Godfather of Soul
Unlike so many biographical documentaries, this videocassette covers the artist's entire career to date. The typical presentation concentrates on "the hits". "James Brown - The Godfather Of Soul" provides insight into the development of his music in general, thanks in part to comments from Stevie Wonder, B.B. King, and biographer Bruce Tucker. For the already initiated the very rare stills which permeate the production, plus the c. 1969 live clips of "Please, Please, Please" and "Say It Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud" should make ...
