VHS : Irish Railway Journey: Derry to Kerry
This was a disappointing purchase. It's unfortunately more about trains than it is about Ireland and Northern Ireland. Palin isn't funny in it either. There was also a vaguely pro-loyalist lean to the reporting on the troubles. All in all, it was a strange, mildly condescending (in a "look at the funny rock bowling games they play" and "is that a priest singing?" way), and rather boring view of Ireland. The best part was the scenery.

I grew up within spitting distance of one of these castles, the Marksburg on the Rhine. The series is fascinating because it fills the places with life, something you don't get to see when you visit. But it's not over the top and sappy. Many local areas experience a medieval revival these days and markets and plays are held at many of these locations throughout the year. So if you plan a visit, check out the schedules online and you might catch more than just the ruins and vistas but a lively show that sets ... Read More:

VHS : QE2: The Queen of Ships
This video, although short, is excellent. Unfortnately it lost a point for focusing on the Queens Grill part of the ship and didn't give more of an idea about food and accommodation for the other grades. And it was a little disappointing we never saw it arrive in Southampton at the end of the crossing while we had seen it set sail from New York. Apart from that, despite being a little pricey for the length, it is a good buy. It gives a nice overview of the ship's various areas and has interviews with the ... Read More:

These videos were very well photographed. Aside from the narration occasionally turning to the cheesy side by iterating quotes with fake accents, this is a great collection to see some of the natural beauty that America has to offer. Makes you want to run out and visit these places and find more of what's out there.
If your not interested in scenic beauty, then this collection probably isn't for you.

I loved this video. I was a Spanish student for years, but never got to go to Spain. Mr. Steves talks honestly about Spanish history, and shows you where important monuments are located. I liked his treatment of Barcelona as a separate cultural entity. I saw for myself the Moorish influence on architecture. I saw that Gibralter doesn't belong to Spain. Traveling to Morocco by ferry helped demystify the relationship between Africa and Spain. In short, this video brought me up to date on the Spain I studied in language ... Read More:

VHS : Italy: Rome, Naples & the Amalfi Coast
As with all of Rick Steves's travel videos, this product is not for those interested in information on the main tourist attractions. Apparently Rick Steves believes you can get that stuff anywhere.

The "Italy: Rome, Naples & the Amalfi Coast" video concentrates on attractions that are slightly off the beaten path. It's great for those who love to travel but hate crowds. Better yet, as usual, Steves demonstrates how to find the most memorable places to visit while remaining on a tight budget.
