| There was much controversy over the release and re-broadcast of this version, with Ronstadt playing Mabel. While the rest of the title cast (Kline, Rose, Smith, etc.) were marvelous, Ronstadt was selected to play Mabel for her "star" status at the time - and the raw outlook, that she was a country-western singer, NOT an opera or classical voice. | This is one of the best of the movies made by Nelson and Jeanette.
It has adventure, music, humor and love. The songs are great and this movie can be seen multiple time, getting better everytime. Enjoy |

| Domingo sings beautifully, Stratas less so but looks and acts the part. The biggest problem is there are so many cuts and shortened arias that you could almost call this "extended highlights". And Zeferelli over-produces, particularly with camera work. If you want a movie version get Anna Moffo's of over 30 years ago. Now there was a Violetta! |

| This is an excellent video of a very straightforward, conservative, and traditional staging of the Mikado. It does not have any of the lack of confidence that some video productions seem to have in trying to make a stage production seem to be anything more than it ought to be; it is as if the camera is very unobtrusively moving around in a traditional stage production. | Yes, previous reviewers are correct, the great lady is past her prime. IT DOESN'T MATTER. She is still the best singer on the stage and her acting as well as her stage manners are exemplary. She gives some of the best demonstrations of how to acknowledge audience applause without breaking character.

| This has become my favorite opera, mainly because of this performance. Every character is superbly played. The music is a beautiful as can be imagined. Sanford Olson has one of the greatest tenor voices I have ever heard and his role is magnificent. |
