VHS : Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
It's hard to believe anyone could build a feature-length story on a song and come up with something this good. But writer Romeo Mueller and producers Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin, Jr. did just that.

This story of misfits finding their rightful place in the world is just the Christmas tale solitary children the world over need to hear. Its beautiful and subversive message feels all the more heartfelt because we receive it through the delicately hand-wrought images of stop-motion animation. ... Read More:

VHS : Harry Connick,Jr.-The Christmas Special
The Harry Connick Jr. Christmas Special was first broadcast on Christmas Eve 1993, on CBS. The picture quality and sound is superb. The most wonderful thing about this VHS tape is that it includes musical numbers not included in the original television broadcast. Harry Connick Jr. captures the spirit of Christmas unlike any other contemporary performer. This is truly a "must-have" for anyone who loves good ole-fashion Christmas entertainment.

VHS : Jazz - A Film by Ken Burns
The greatest compliment to this series is that it has created a torrent of discussion and the debates are still raging. I enjoy this series so much, I watch it nearly every year.

My critique has been discussed at length, so I summarize this way:

I appreciate Wynton Marsalis' discussion of the jazz with which he is familiar. This does not qualify Wynton Marsalis to decide, for everyone else, what constitutes jazz when the question of "fusion" comes up.

Much of fusion, both ... Read More:

VHS : Wild Man Blues
While this is, technically, an adequate-to-good documentary (Barbara Kopple always does technically proficient work) -- as for its *truthfulness* about the characters involved, specifically, Woody and his now-wife Soon Yi, it's an excellent example of Woody Allen's ongoing manipulation of the media.

Consider this: It's the late 1990s, Woody Allen is in a world of trouble over his affair with a young, underage girl, Soon-Yi, who at one time was the adopted child of Woody's common law wife, Mia Farrow. He was also ... Read More:

This is an excellent DVD. I particularly enjoyed the audio commentary by Ray Faiola, which is superb. The commentary is so full of valuable historical information and trivia. I have listened to many DVD audio commentaries, and they range in quality from very good to very bad. This audio commentary is, without a doubt, one of the best I have ever heard. Other distributors of DVD's should listen to this audio commentary as an example of how it should be done! There are other good extras on this DVD, including an A&E Biography on Alice Faye, three deleted ... Read More:

VHS : Adventures in the Kingdom of Swing
The only criticism I have of this is that it could have been three hours long with all the available material and surviving members of his bands... well, it's still a 5 star video for the fan of jazz. Benny Goodman is a legend and the DVD is a short but fitting tribute.
