VHS : Laura (1944)
For the most part, this is a good film: well-written, well-photographed, well-directed and well-acted. But for me, Gene Tierney simply does not have the beauty or strength or charisma that the part of Laura seems to call for. She's certainly pretty, but not beautiful or striking. She's competent, but I wouldn't call her brilliant. I'm told that she is all these things but I really can't see it for myself. I can't, in my own imagination, see her walking into a room and turning everyone's head around, ... Read More:

VHS : Blue Dahlia
The Blue Dahlia is a quintessential film noir, one of the great films that defined the genre. Army men return from World War II to find their wives drunk and cheating with scumbag jazz club owners. Whether this film has not been released on DVD in the U.S. is quite curious, considering almost every film noir has been burned onto DVD in various collections of the genre. My guess is that Turner owns the film, and hopes to air it only on TCM, or the potentially racist comment in the film has people worried. ... Read More:

VHS : Midnight Lace
Fog-shrouded London is the setting for MIDNIGHT LACE, a glossy thriller starring Doris Day as a terrorised heiress.

Doris Day plays Kit, an American heiress, newly-married to suave English businessman Tony Preston (Rex Harrison). Kit's life couldn't be happier, until she becomes the target of obscene phonecalls and begins to have 'accidents'. The detectives at Scotland Yard begin to feel that perhaps Kit is seeking attention, and even Kit's loving Aunt Bea (Myrna Loy) has her doubts. Is Kit going mad? ... Read More:

VHS : Woman in the Window
Even though this isn't a famous film noir, I'd recommend it. The production values were very good. It's a good crime mystery, with a well-developed plot line and a surprise ending. Tension builds as the movie progresses. Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett, and Raymond Massey both gave excellent performances. And, yes, the film is very noir.

VHS : Johnny Eager
Oh, those minority opinions! This reviewer agrees with previous writer Keehn in giving a 3.5 rating to "Johnny Eager". JE falls short of noir or true crime superiority: As the film opens, Robert Taylor is a hard working cabdriver, meeting with his avuncular parole officer (A.J. Verne) and trying to stay straight after a spell in the Big House. It quickly-all too quickly-becomes clear that the cab is a front. Taylor is actually operating a dog track! This reviewer deemed RT a bit too debonair to play a hood-or to be pushing a hack. ... Read More:

VHS : Big Sleep (1946)
Humphrey Bogart was probally the big screen's best reprsentive of the hard boiled prive eye, and this film gave him a superlative chance to demonstrate this. the film has been critized for failing to tie up some loose ends-a murder never gets solved, for example-but that aspect simply makes it more realistic. In real life, you always get things that don't add up or fit the general picture. So it's actually more realistic than a move that pretneds to answer all the questions. A superlative movie.

VHS : Kiss of Death
****1/2 1947. Directed by Henry Hathaway. Richard Widmark, in his first role, earned a Golden Globe (Most promising newcomer) and an Academy award nomination, so does Eleazar Lipsky for the screenplay. Victor Mature accepts to become a snitch in order to be with his children. KISS OF DEATH is a classic film noir shot on location as often in movies produced by 20th Century Fox at that time. Classic scenes like the murder of Rizzo's mother by Widmark, the first hold-up or Richard Widmark's laugh already belong to history. Highly recommended and a valuable addition ... Read More:

VHS : Touch of Evil
A big "Citizen Kane" fan in my youth, I saw Touch of Evil in 1981 and thought it was simply awful. Then recently I heard of this reissue, and thought I'd buy it and watch it again. I discovered that in our youth we often know what's right, but often doubt ourselves. The movie is still awful. It may be more true to Welle's vision, but it's still awful. His talent had gone, quite obviously, by this time.

Many of us want so desperately to find Welles' later work important that we'll do almost anything to trick ourselves into thinking it is. Most often men do this... ... Read More:
