"October 1918" is the date for this story. German soldiers are planting explosives to destroy the advancing British soldiers when they occupy a French city. The townspeople hurriedly evacuate the town. The British are warned, they will not march into town. Instead Private Plumpick [some pun?] will be sent in to scout the town and defuse the bombs - by himself! [Believable?] Discovered by the Germans, he flees into a building for refuge and safety; it is the local insane asylum. The result of the ... Read More:

I saw this in a theater way back in the 50's and liked it then. This new DVD release looks even better than that old "big" screen movie version. The VHS version satisfied for a while, but the DVD is superior, just as one would expect it to be. The final scene is truly remarkable considering it was done long before computer generated imaging. Must be seen to be believed. If you're a kid, or have one, it's a must for your collection!

We just saw this movie on TV and while it probably deserved the 2 stars the TV rating gave it, we had a ball watching it. This movie has it all! Cowboys, Indians, Train Robberies, Mexican Missions, Prostitutes, Gushing Fake Blood, and Samurai. What more could you ask for in a Western.

4.Everybody's Fine starring: Marcello Mastroianni, Michèle Morgan, Valeria Cavalli, Marino Cenna, Norma Martelli

VHS : Everybody's Fine
It seems that each of Tornatore's movies (such as "Cinema Pradiso", or "The Legend of 1900") is a journey. Here too, we are offered a journey - an ageing Sicilian father visiting his grown-up children in the North. They all pretend that they are getting along well in their lives, though, the turth is much different and painly obvious.

The experience of the father is not single dimensional - Mastorianni delivers a rich character, who seeks to reconcile his hopes, his desire, yet inability to help. ... Read More:

VHS : Literary Masterpieces: The Count of Monte Cristo
I saw this when it was first shown on US television in about 1975 and was amazed by the storyline and the acting. I had seen Chamberlain in his TV series, but this film allowed him a vast range of emotions and exercises which the Tv show did not. I had not read the novel then, of course.

Relatively, this is the video version people should watch. I videotaped it a couple of times (once the result was not so great) and watch it sporadically since. The book I read in 1989 on a commuter train between Sunnyvale and San ... Read More:

I was under the impression that "Wings of Desire" was a unique love story and I guess it is. However that aspect of the film was almost a distraction compared to the real nature of the movie. For me, "Wings of Desire" is a brilliant cinematic concept of angels in the world around us. If that sounds overly religious or unappealling, hold on. The way director Wim Wenders brings his vision to life is the essential beauty of this movie. We almost get the impression that these angels punch in and punch out. They are sincere and they ... I a might like this better if it wasn't Pixar. But it's not witty, at all, has great animation and good action scenes and few laughs. Few, as in not enough to support film. Oh, well.

"Harold and Maude" is a romantic, darkly comic fantasy about two eccentric souls who briefly find in each other love and companionship. Young Harold is obsessed with death, attending funerals and staging suicide-themed vignettes starring none other than himself. Mother tries to cure him of his eccentricities by finding a computer date for him; Uncle feels the military will shape him up. A Freudian psychiatrist offers counsel as does a lecherous priest. All to no avail. Harold, pale and a little creased around the mouth, is a lonely young ... Read More:

Can it be that the only DVD edition of this is for non-US countries? I think this film is brilliant. From start to finish, it showed the impact that one person can have with determination. It is a film in my library I watch at least once a year. What a crime to not have a DVD edition!
