VHS : In the Land of the Deaf
I have watched this film twice. What doesn't seize to surprise me is the soundtrack of it all. It may seem to be lacking music for the most part but I wish I had a recording of the sound of this film exactly as it is, it has a rythm that is hard for me to explain. I also enjoyed the many levels of good storytelling it has.

VHS : Triumph of the Will
Triumph of the Will is an absolutley stunning photographic masterpiece. Bearing in mind it was made nearly 80 years ago, Leni Riefenstahl's photgraphic techniques are nothing short of brilliant. It was very interesting to note that many of Adolf Hitler's speeches were fairly bland, but the way he put it over was quite outstanding. In places it nearly had me up on my feet with my arm in the air! It shows how he was able to captivate millions with the power of his oratory.

How lucky we are to have this wonder available, as copyright problems have kept it out of European cimenas for decades. If there has ever been a better film, I haven't seen it. It rings as true now as when I saw it as a student in Paris in the seventies. Yes, the pathos is milked for all it is worth, but the acting is glorious, and it seems as if the circus hasn't left town yet. Enjoy. John Bald

VHS : Hidden Korea
Using cuisine as a sort of touchstone, this documentary explores many aspects of traditional Korean culture, including herbal medicine, Confucian and Buddhist rituals, and celadon pottery making. After a few scenes of crowded Seoul at the beginning, the film leaves modern Korea behind and goes out to the countryside in search of Old Korea. The film, hosted by a rather humorless food scholar named Bruce Kraig, gives a broad overview of traditional culture. Because it tries to cover so much, the documentary lacks coherence, jumping from ... Read More:

Absolutely hilarious... Though you do wish the documentary was a bit more balanced. Kinski may well have been the ultimate nightmare actor, but director Herzog drove his crews and actors to extremes that would drive anyone crazy. Still this is a surprisingly fun documentary about an egotistical actor, who inspired even the most gentle, simple tribal people who met him (during the filming of Fitzcaraldo and Aguirre: Wrath of God) to kill him. Would make a great triple bill with the documentaries of the productions of Coppola's "Apocalypse ... Read More:

VHS : Un Chien Andalou / Land Without Bread
This tape includes two very different pieces from Buñuel (directed at not too distant time from each other, the late 1920s and the early 1930s). The first is Un Chien Andalou, which is credited as being codirected by Salvador Dali. This surreal short must have been terribly shocking when it was made, but I think that more than 75 years later, a lot of its impact has softened, perhaps because its surreal tricks have appeared in a lot of later movies.
The second piece is flawed too, though at least is more interesting - and I think more polemical, also. ... Read More:

VHS : Dream of Light
A movie where so little happens and where everything is stunning. I keep trying to tell my friends what is so marvelous about this film and I always fail. A man wants to paint a tree and he talks to his friends... Out of this comes a profound analysis of art and life. It is a movie I want to see many times so that as I grow and age and hopefully gain wisdom I will see more and more within it. If you love art, film, light through leaves, talking with your friends, pondering life, then this film was made for you - although I thought the director made it just for me.
