WEEK-END

Jean-Luc Godard's WEEK-END is certainly beyond the usual egocentrism of Nouvelle Vague (New Wave) movies. In other terms, while the formers (including his BREATHLESS) deal with personal characteristic themes, WEEK-END is dominated by philosophical, cultural, social, and geopolitical themes. It's a franc satire of the Parisian upper-class but more importantly it's a dark view of the modern civilization's self decay, materialism, apathy, terrorism, and violence. And though the ... VHS : La Grande Bouffe
Surprisingly, this middle aged boys' weekend-out is much more sexy than many pure-porno movies, but a bit boring for stupidity of a realm screened.

VHS : Solaris
Lil' Sara should see this film, maybe her opinions about the 'evil Russian terroristas ' of gulag, block housing, vodka drunks and all other stereotypes that the crazylouco wing of terrans residing within the USA borders hold dear to their hearts can be dismissed.

What I mean to say, the typical USian can see quite a bit of the rural and urban landscape BEFORE being jettisoned to 'outer space', and realise once again, in the gentlest of terms to those of parochial and provincial manner...welcom to the world! (and ... Read More:

VHS : Wicked City
I have a vague memory of seeing the live Hong-Kong version of Wicked City prior to watching the Anime version, and liking it. No idea why I got the viewing order switched around, but these things happen. I even remember liking this low-budget sci-fi stuntfest AFTER watching the Anime.

Funny how your mind can play tricks on you. With that tiny, vague memory in place, I bought a used DVD copy at a fire-sale that my local video store was having (should'a been a hint, probably). Feeling oddly like I'd just found a long lost ... Read More:

VHS : I, a Woman
Its plot is now a cliche and a staple of late night Cinemax movies. But there was a time when cinema was trying to seriously explore adult themes. And in the 1960's one of the most important of these was "I,a Woman".
The plot is quite simple. A naive woman, raised in a Christian family decides to break away and explore her sexuality by having sex with as many men as possible. What makes it special is the almost quaint quality the movie projects. And, of course, the presence of a an amazingly beautiful and special actress called Essy Persson. ... Read More:

VHS : Alphaville
The action in Alphaville is set in a future where everything is run by the big computer Alpha 60. It's hard to take this film seriously, the futuristic vision is very 1960s: the fear of a computerized society where machines rule with cold rationality and so on. As an example of this vision it is interesting. But Godard doesn't elaborate this future society very much so it is never especially "believable" or consistent. It is more like a playful attempt to make a budget sci-fi: the special effects are restricted to blinking neon signs and close-ups ... Read More:

VHS : Lone Wolf and Cub - Sword of Vengeance
The comic series Lone Wolf and Cub is one of the most epic, action packed, and respected series of all time. It's influenced many artists and writers, while at the same time been copied by countless people who overdo it more often than not. It quickly got a few movies due to its success, and did fairly well, though there's a lot of criticism that the later installments tried to one-up the first couple volumes (I'll see about that soon enough). But there are still a lot of people unfamiliar with Lone Wolf and Cub, by that name at least. If you mention ... Read More:

While the movie does live up to its hype, i found it a tad boring, but thank god it was only about an hour. The use of biotechnical persons was different and interesting, but too random with arts that didnt even make sense. 5 if i coulda been on the edge of my seat, if you buy it, have a snack ready.
