After Wayne hit the jackpot in John Ford's groundbreaking Western STAGECOACH (1939) he was quickly reunited with his co-star Claire Trevor in ALLEGHENY UPRISING (1939) and again here in the DARK COMMAND (1940). Directed by Raoul Walsh, the man who incidentally gave young Michael Morrison his first starring role as a very young "John Wayne" in THE BIG TRAIL (1929) but it was a box office failure and Wayne was relegated to mainly B-Westerns until rescued by John Ford.

I did not particularly liked the movie. I think it was done on the cheap, too full of cliches, macho posturing, and as usual depicted the foes of Bowie, Crockett, and other defenders of the Alamo as unconscionable, mean people, misstatements, and with omissions of truths. I personally do not recommend the movie to anyone.

In a recent interview on the "Director's" series on TV, Lawrence
Kasdan noted that Kevin Costner was already well into production on
this "series", when he asked Kasdan to come on as Director. Costner
was preparing a mini-series for HBO of "Earp", and, when that fell
through he needed help in reshaping it as a movie. Kasdan did what
he could, but it was too late to do very much in the way of cutting
the series down. Other: I love this film, and I love the fact that
Earp never ... Read More:

VHS : Geronimo (1962)
I viewed this movie as a decent Western, if taken as pure American mythology, in the same spirit as Longfellow's "Song of Hiawatha". Unlike, however, Longfellow's epic and flowing lyric, "Geronimo" gets bogged down in some noticably stupid aspects; most obviously, the ludicrous casting of the blonde/blue eyed Chuck Connors as the lead. Although, it appeared as though real Native Americans were cast as extras, all major Apache roles seemed to be filled by whites.

Another imbecility was that the beautiful actress who played Geronimo's wife ... Read More:

I didn't expect to find this so moving! I initially wanted to watch it for Reba McEntire. (I'm a fairly new Reba fan and I've been trying to watch and listen to everything of hers I can find.) Well, she is only in about 15 minutes of the movie, but the performances were all superb and I'm glad I bothered to watch the whole thing.

9.Hour of the Gun starring: James Garner, Jason Robards, Robert Ryan, Albert Salmi, Charles Aidman

VHS : Hour of the Gun
"Hour of the Gun" was one of the first attempts to accurately portray Wyatt Earp and the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, and the bloody aftermath which followed. The movie begins with an exciting and fairly-accurate reenactment of the historic gunfight. The rest of the film itself is fine, but a tad bit uneven in its storytelling and characters. The story drags a bit, but picks up when the guns are drawn. It's also a tad historically inaccurate, though films of the time never tried too hard to be correct to the events like they do nowadays.
The performances ... Read More:

Failure to give this a ZERO STAR Rating this gets one...It seems it is more popular to bash
the lives of American Heroes, than give an honest portrayal. With the excuse of filming these
as "Comedies", these type of films have been churned-out since the late '60's, such as "Little
Big Man" and the portrayal of General George Custer. Those of us who actually KNOW about
American History and the contribution made by these men will find this one another waste of
time!
