When C.S.Lewis, author of such books as "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" was only a small boy of 9, his mother died and he learned that his only way through the pain and loneliness was to encase himself in an impenetrable shell, so that pain could not touch him. He leads an ordered, safe life as an Oxford Don, singing in the cathedral choir and lecturing to audiences of adoring women readers. When he meets American writer, Joy Gresham, her brash, New York, Jewish forthrightness almost batters ... Read More:

VHS : Treasure Island (1990)
This is one of the best versions of "Treasure Island". It has a really wonderful cast with Charlton Heston, Oliver Reed, Christopher Lee and Christian Bale. To whom it may concern: please put this on DVD, nice extras would be commentary with Lee, Bale and director Fraser Heston.

VHS : A Cry In The Wild
Am I the only one that's paying attention to what's on this page or are these reviews being sent to the wrong page? All the reviews I've read here are for a completely different movie! "Cry in the Wild: The Taking of Peggy Ann" is a made for TV movie (1991) based on the true story of Peggy Ann Bradnick's 1966 abduction by a deranged mountain man (played by David Morse) that led to the largest manhunt in Pennsylvania history. The screenplay was written by Durrell Royce Crays. The abduction and subsequent manhunt was also ... Read More:

VHS : War of the Buttons (1994)
Colin Welland may have won an Oscar for his Chariots of Fire (Two-Disc Special Edition), but in his adaptation of the Louis Pergaud novel set in the early 1900's France and later filmed by Yves Robert in 1962, this move to Ireland lacks the playfulness and innocence of the original and makes these kids from two rival camps way more brutal and warmongering with hateful language. As an Irishman, all I can say is "Why do we keep doing this to ourselves?" Sorry, but this film is full of hateful words, destructive and nearly ... Read More:

VHS : Anne of Green Gables
Two things captivated me in these films. One was the incredible scope of Megan Follows' performance, as she plays Anne through three phases of her life. Simply marvelous. And second, that though the stories will appeal to all audiences, they were mainly about Anne's serious interaction with other women --her step mother, friends in school, women of the town, women at college, women where Anne goes to teach and finally even women in Europe during the war. There are plenty of strong men in the series, and wonderful actors, ... Read More:

If you're looking for a Book turned into a movie--this is it but in a very obscure fashion. This movie takes the stereotypes that Long writes about in his short novel and basically flips them around here. Here you have the American man, but it is he that is hopelessly inlove with the Asian "woman" (using that term lightly). She is the one that is full of decite and ends up betraying him. At the end, he has to realize that he, not only was abdoned and betrayed, but it was by a man. This movie had great twists and turns and ... Read More:

VHS : The African Queen
What a work of art! This is one of the best movies of all time. When the spinster missionary woman (Hepburn) must TOLERATE Mr. Arnaut (Bogart)
in their life-threatening trip down the river in a beat-up old boat, The African Queen, the fun begins. She can drum up no respect for this man--until she realizes that he is an intelligent person who may be able to save their lives by his cool wit. He good naturedly sloughs off her constant criticism, while she endures his slovenly ways and colorful language. At some point they start developing ... Read More:

Please, please stay the heck away from this dog. Basically, it's a bunch of street punks running around in diapers and women's makeup talking about "ultra-violence" that never really occurs, and the plot is even worse. This one gave me a massive migraine. I am truly not kidding about what this flick did to me! I remember watching it, hoping there was a point to all of it, but there truly wasn't. If you liked that massive WTF moment at the end of 2001 A space Odyssey, then this one's for you, since you'll get it. I sure as heck didn't, I actually grew nauseous at the ... Read More:

VHS : Ivanhoe (1982)
I am so SAD about having to say negative things about this film. I'm a devout disciple of Ivanhoe, and a mesmerized fan of Anthony Andrews, so it feels like treachery to say that I've never been so disappointed in a film...What a CAST. But such meaningless drivel for dialog... True, this version DID include Athelstane, but to what purpose? He added nothing, he was totally incidental---well, blast it, WILFRED was incidental...And, bless her heart, that cute little girl didn't look remotely Saxon...And lovely Olivia looks more as if she's distressed and confused by the quality ...
