VHS : Hi-Lo Country
Hi-Lo country's plot has already been summarized here a few dozen times, so I'll get right to the element that followed me after I finished this film. The principle friendship, between Crudup's and Harrelson's characters, appear like many of our own at first glance: rock-solid, inseparable, and fixed upon the strongest loyalties. They fight for one another and watch each other's backs like hawks; and yet, when a woman comes into play and divides them, the wheels of their loyalty come unhinged and ... Read More:

One of my top five (four? three? two?) films of all time. Cinematically lush and evocative.... Provocative, sensual and painting characters with a richness that allows the viewer to connect and empathize (quite a trick with character ranging from man-hating lesbian to old world old man autocrat). Watch it.

3.Dangerous Liaisons starring: Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer, Swoosie Kurtz, Keanu Reeves

VHS : Dangerous Liaisons
Dangerous Liaisons starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich, and Michelle Pfeiffer star in this classic film. All three stars bring excitement, strength, and charmisa to their roles. Keanu Reeves and Uma Thurman also star as supporting and naive characters. Close is no stranger to playing an unappealing dame. I like this film but the language and costumes are too distracting to fully enjoy this old-fashioned film.

4.Gumshoe starring: Albert Finney, Billie Whitelaw, Frank Finlay, Janice Rule, Carolyn Seymour

Mark Twain once said something along these lines about women swearing: "They've got the words, but the tune isn't quite right." I shall distance myself from the subject of Twain on women (run away from it like a thief, as a matter of fact), but turn the observation to the English and their understanding of American hard-boiled detective stories. They've got the words, but the tune isn't quite right.

They certainly have an ear for the patter. (Dashiell Hammett: "The cheaper the crook, the gaudier the patter.") ... Read More:

The film covers a short period of time in the life of Omar, a young Pakistani living in London in the 80's. His father is a brilliant, well educated socialist who was famous back home but is a nobody there, so he has taken to his bed with a bottle of vodka. His hope is in Omar, and he expects him to go to college to understand the evils of society. Meanwhile, though they need cash and he calls on his successful brother, Nassar to give Omar a summer job in one of his many businesses.

We watch Omar as he gains favor with ... Read More:

I just watched this for the first time in a few years and laughed aloud once again. As a pure comedy and portrait of Irish life just prior to the Celtic Tiger '90's, this film is unbeatable. A great "fillum". Something interesting:

I was in the mood to see The Van and The Snapper again (having just rented The Commitments at my local Blockbuster) and was lamenting the fact that they are so hard to find. My local rare-release rental shop, Movie Madness, is the only place I was sure of finding them. However, having just got the Tivo-style ... Read More:

VHS : High Fidelity

2000 brought us High Fidelity, the movie adaptation of the popular book by Nick Hornby of the same title. The tale of Rob Gordon(John Cusak) a socially awkward, music elitist who owns a small vinyl record store.

When his live-in girlfriend Laura(Iben Hjejle) leaves him, Rob begins to further to wallow in his own sadness by relieving his top five heartbreaks and rejections. From his first junior high girlfriend of three days to the woman who can never be single but left him for a better option, Rob is set on deciphering exactly what ... Read More:

Love this movie, although I wondered why the Rabbite family was changed to the Curley family. Then again, the original author, Roddy Doyle, was involved in writing this screenplay, so I'm fine with the name changes.

What I really want to do is ping on the many reviewers who spoil the plot by revealing how Sharon's pregnancy occurred. Yes, the old guy who is the father of one of Sharon's friends did brag about it, but the movie does not intend for the viewer to know for sure that he is the culprit; he might have been just making an empty boast. Instead, ... Read More:
