VHS : Spartacus
The name Spartacus has a long and honorable history in the annals of the modern international labor movement, most notably, as used by Rosa Luxemburg, Karl Liebknecht and their comrades as the early name for their ill-fated revolutionary organization the Sparatacusbund in the 1919 German revolutionary working class uprising. Why would a 20th century revolutionary labor organization use the name of a pre-Christian era Thracian slave-general for their organization? To state the question is to provide ... Read More:

VHS : Dr Strangelove
A very intelligent yet hilarious look at the insanity of war and those responsible for waging it in the nuclear age. Full of 4 Star performances by Peter Sellers (in multiple roles), Sterling Hayden, George C. Scott and Slim Pickens, the epitome of the commie-fighting cowboy

The behind-the-scenes companion DVD is just as much of a treat as the film itself: the set designers made educated guesses as to the interior of a B-52 bomber, and turned out to be so accurate that the Air Force got concerned ... Read More:

VHS : Paths of Glory (B&W)
This is an oft-times overlooked film in the Kubrick canon, and that's something that is unfortunate. At the base, the story is a satire on injustice in the military / injustice in war. It takes on a number of themes all at once, and does so gracefully without ending up looking like a rudderless plot.

Kirk Douglas plays a French colonel (Dax) in World War I. He is one of the few officers in the film who has genuine integrity. As such, he finds himself in conflict with the nefarious actions of his superior ... Read More:

VHS : Eyes Wide Shut
Once again, a Kubrick film gets panned by the know-nothing critics and brainless movie-going public. Big deal. This is an extraordinary film; easily among Kubrick's best. I'm sorry, but if you are a Kubrick fan you've got to at least respect Eyes Wide Shut. Even on the most base, technical level it's a marvel. I'm not being snobbish here, just bluntly honest. Kubrick thought this was his best work, and it's not hard to see why once you give it a good look. It is like an onion in that there are endless layers of symbolism and meaning to ... Read More:

VHS : Barry Lyndon
Since I love this movie I'll limit myself to the issue of the aspect ratio. In summary: Kubrick wanted the film to look this way--a decision he made while preparing the now out-of-print "Collection" of his films.

According to an Editor's Note on the 1999 release (found here (Amazon doesn't allow URL-insertion, so you'll have to copy-paste): [...] the Aspect Ratio is exactly the way The Master intended.

According to the WB spokesperson quoted on the above ref'd page, "In every respect, the films in the Collection remain as Kubrick approved them." ... Read More:

VHS : Lolita (1962)
Although this movie does not really accurately portray Nabokov's story, it is a work of art in itself. Sue Lyon is perfect as the object of sexual obsession. James Mason is perfect as the obsessed. Shelly Winters is perfect as Shelly Winters. Sue was never able to continue on with different roles and we wonder what she would have been like if she had. We are able to start to see some of Stanley Kubrick's genius in this early movie of his career. Although, I don't personally approve of this type of situation, I am highly entertained by it and we have all known characters that resemble the characters in ... Read More:
